Meet Downtown Photographer: Logan Havens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Logan Havens.

Logan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was always involved in art, but always told it was impossible. I did it anyways, and it worked out somehow. I graduated from university two years ago, moved to la, and have been working full-time ever since.

Has it been a smooth road?
Of course, it wasn’t easy. From being a child and told it’s impossible to be an artist and eat, to finding a way through school without drowning in debt, to starting off a career in a new city. Being financially independent and making it an art world isn’t easy. That said, when it works out, it really works.

When you look back, what are you most proud of?
The first year I filed my taxes and realized that I am a productive and contributing member of society entirely. I had been told for so long I would never make it, it was almost surprising to see I could actually succeed.

Every story has ups and downs. What were some of the downs others might not be aware of?
My first big trip, I convinced my five closest friends to join me camping through Europe. I don’t know how “sleeping under bridges and eating bread and water.” Got all of them to come, but they did.

Two weeks into the trip we were robbed while camping in Spain. They took everything I had. Passport, camera, clothes. All I had was a sleeping bag, swimsuit, and sandals.

I was applying to a university that fall and was planning on using the images for the trip as my application photos. I had saved all of my money for that camera and it was gone.

We kept going for three weeks after I was able to get an emergency passport.

Generally, in my life, I have come from very small towns and have been financially independent. There were long periods of time where I lived off of potatoes and grilled cheese sandwiches. It was a fight to get where I am, but I don’t regret any of it.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles has the potential to be the best city in the world for someone starting a career, The quality of life is very good, the recourses are fantastic because of the film industry, and fresh interesting things are happening.
