Meet Downtown, Los Angeles Fashion Designer: Beverly Hu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beverly Hu.

Beverly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Since an early age, I have always been drawn to creativity. My mother says I had to be doodling on something, sculpting tiny figurines with Play-Doh or clay, drawing with chalk on the sidewalks, and begging her to buy me an easel and more paint tubes. Seeing the finished art piece was the most wonderful feeling in the world. A creation that once was only in my mind is now brought into this world for all eyes to see. It wasn’t until high school, where I decided I wanted to translate my ideas into clothing– a decision that just felt so right. The thought of individuals actually wearing my designs, my creativity! It’s the same feeling I experienced when I was younger…seeing my art finished on a piece of paper, a concrete sidewalk, or a piece of canvas. Except for this time, my goal is to see my art be brought into the world by the individuals who choose to wear them.

Has it been a smooth road?
Becoming a clothing designer has definitely had it’s difficult moments. Being a single mother while needing to do long, sleepless nights at school was one of the most hardest days I had to get through. At times, getting an idea or design out was more difficult than usual…it just felt off or wasn’t exactly the way you want something– like an itch you can’t scratch. A very frustrating feeling. At other times, I would feel doubt creeping up slowly behind my mind. Questions would litter my mind, questions like, “Am I…good enough for this industry?” Looking at legendary designers like Coco Chanel or Christian Dior– these guys built empires! However, no matter the hardships, the frustrations, or the doubt, I always found myself pushing through. The hardships and frustrations turned into learning experiences and the doubt became inspiration and motivation. Always through the negative feelings, I found myself in a better place than I was before.

Have you ever wanted to stop doing what you do and just start over?
I remember many times where I have come close to giving up. All of these times have one thing in common– my doubt. I was never sure if I was good enough or if my work would be something people would accept. After numerous times of coming close to throwing it all away, I’ve come to realize that if I were to quit, I will never know how it will be to succeed. After this realization, the feeling of quitting came less and less often. It was easier to continue pushing, to believe in my work, and to start again after every fail.

Let’s change gears – is there any advice you’d like to give?
The Fashion industry is a difficult one. Know what you want to gain from it, and work your ass off to get there! I don’t believe that one tremendously successful individual from this industry ever had it easy. There’s some sort of mentality you must have. You have to be mentally strong in knowing that it will be tough for a long time. You need to have the discipline to do things over and over again until it’s right. I think the most important (and cliché) rule to know, is to believe in yourself. Truly know that this is the path you want to be on and work hard to stay on it.

Is there something you are particularly excited about or working towards?
I can’t wait until the day where I spot someone on the streets wearing my design! Aside from one day owning my own line, I’m extremely excited about the people I will meet! This journey has already taken me to meet some amazing lifelong friends in my life. I learn so much from any person I work with, and it’s exciting to know that in this industry, I will always meet more creative and interesting individuals.
