Meet Downtown LA Photographer: Karen Rosalie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Chen.

Karen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for picture and art making but I didn’t think I could do that as a career until I first picked up a camera in my junior year at UCLA. Once I realized that I wanted to pursue photography, I graduated early and went straight into getting work experience. I’ve always believed that the best way to learn (especially in photography) is to just throw yourself into the fire. It’s the best way to learn.

I’m lucky in that I started working with one of the biggest fashion bloggers very early on in my career. I became the editorial manager of and I traveled to fashion week with the team to create editorial and social content around the world. We’ve worked with luxury brands like Elie Saab, Viktor & Rolf, Ferragamo, etc. The blog was named by as one of the top blogs in the world and Chriselle Lim was named by Bloglovin as Blogger of the Year. I’m very lucky to have had the privilege of leading and defining the site’s photography for the past 3 years.

I took a step back a few months ago from that role and started my own creative content agency where I now work with fashion and beauty brands to create editorials and social content. I recently traveled to Milan with top beauty YouTuber Marianna Hewitt for Furla, an Italian luxury label, to document the making of their bags at the factories and to see their new Fall collection.

It’s not easy pursuing a career that doesn’t have a defined path, but there’s really nothing else in the world that I’d rather do!

Has it been a smooth road?
I think the biggest struggle was learning to believe in myself. And unfortunately, as an artist, your work gets better the more you work on it. So I went through a 2-3 year period where I was constantly like “wow this sucks,” to finally like “okay I think I can be confident with this.” I think the biggest challenge is always the mental challenge that comes when you decide to endeavor on anything that is difficult.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and career?
I would say I’m on the luckier side end of things because I’m living my dream of being a photographer working in LA. But I think luck can only take you so far if you don’t take advantage of all the opportunities that are available to you. So really, it’s a combination of both luck and hard work!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think being fearless was the biggest characteristic that I had to learn to get me to where I am today. The biggest moves in my career happened when I decided to forget about my fear and to just “go for it” anyway. I think that’s how you experience the most growth– when you step outside of your comfort zone.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that LA is called the city of dreams. It’s just so apt. I love meeting people in the city that are also hustling and are working so hard for their dreams. I can’t really say there’s anything I dislike about our city, maybe that it’s a little bit more run down compared to other cities?
