Meet Doug Sersun of El Segundo Athletic Club in Downtown El Segundo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Doug Sersun.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My wife, Elaine, and I, launched the El Segundo Athletic Club in the Spring of 2012. After a 24-year career in the U.S. Air Force, we decided to call El Segundo home. We love our city, and are so blessed to be here with our two children. It’s been nice to settle down and establish community for our family…and that’s exactly what we are doing through our service at the El Segundo Athletic Club. Elaine and I are constantly looking for ways to serve and to combine that service with our passions; in this case, health & fitness.

We continue to shape the club to be the central hub of athletic and fitness activity in our city. We wanted to contribute here by strengthening the community. In fact, our tagline is “Making our Community Stronger”, which holds several different meanings for us and our members have seen that mission play itself out over the past 5 years.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We’ve seen steady growth. We started with 290 members in 2012 and are now at 850 members. Revenue has grown 250% over the past 5 years.

El Segundo Athletic Club – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The El Segundo Athletic Club is an intimate full service fitness facility located on Main St. in El Segundo. We offer personal training, nutrition counseling, group exercise classes, cardio and weight-training equipment, free weights, and most importantly, a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

We are most known for our friendly atmosphere – it is quintessential downtown El Segundo…small-town, Main Street USA. People say it feels like Cheers (the iconic TV show) where “everybody knows your name.” We treat everyone like family. We are also known for the quality of our group training programs. These are the things we are most proud of and that set us apart.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Serving my country for 24 years in the Air Force. I served in my final job before retirement as the Chief Engineer of our missile warning satellite program (Space Based Infrared System) at LA Air Force Base.
