Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorien Meilleur.
Dorien, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Ever since I could remember I always pondered the questions “why?”, “how?” and “what?’. During my adolescence, I always wondered how the complex cog’s and parts tinkered in the machine we all love and know today as “Earth”. This persistent curiosity eventually helped me find my love for science and all throughout my academic years, I was a top student in my science courses.
As I got older, my interest began to branch out to the arts such as painting, dance, design/architecture, and most importantly music. I’ve always loved music, but during my 9th-grade year in High School my curiosity took that love to a new level. I began wondering how music was made and how I was able to create music just like my favorite artist and producers. It wasn’t the vocal artist that spiked my interest to learn but the instrumentals/beats that these artists were recording on. I wanted to learn how to replicate the ability music had to evoke emotions. After extensive research, time, and dedication I put in throughout the years, I consider my skills good enough to give myself the title “Music Producer”. Long story short that’s where my passion for music production began and since then, I haven’t stopped perfecting my craft. This is what I want to do in life and I don’t ever see myself stopping.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest struggle in the beginning was the lack of improvement I was seeing during the first couple of years, I started making music. To be honest, I didn’t really get good at producing until after the first 4-5 years. In the beginning, this was very discouraging because I wasn’t seeing any improvement. However, I always told myself that more people quit than fail and I was determined to get better no matter what. Present day I’m doing very well with my production and have even begun working and getting my tracks out to major artist and labels. Place a brick a day and you’ll have a house eventually, right?
Another struggle which I think every producer goes through or has gone through is their family and friends seeing their passion as a pipe-dream. This can also be discouraging but I’ve learned it’s best to put the blinders on and keep moving forward. If I had listened to those people in the past, I wouldn’t have made the amount of progress I have today.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I’m a Music Producer and I go by “GrimDior”. I sell beats and/or compositions to artists, podcasts, and videographers. I also help mix and master artist tracks for final release. My main specialties lie in hip-hop/rap and R&B production. I’m most proud of the work and progress I have achieved on my own. My name/alias and skills are my brand.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I probably would have tried to make more connections in the industry when I first began my journey.
