Meet Donna Borges of ALTANGELES

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Borges.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Donna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My friend and I started ALTANGELES as a platform to share the music of local artists that weren’t getting a lot of media attention even though they were extremely talented and dedicated to their art. We gathered a group of our friends that loved local music as much as we did and started publishing articles about our favorite bands, mostly from Southern California, on altangeles.com.

We officially launched in May of 2018 and since then it has grown to be something much bigger than I was expecting. Our team of writers and photographers has expanded and I’ve made great connections with bands and other people in the industry that I would have never met if it wasn’t for ALTANGELES. In addition to running the publication, I also contribute articles and concert photography to the site.

I put on a show in Santa Ana for our first anniversary as a publication and I am co-presenting a Halloween festival called Phantom Fest with Allyssa from Cosmic Bloom Booking on October 27th. I’m hoping to host more shows around SoCal in the future to support local musicians. I want ALTANGELES to keep growing and to become a community for local music lovers both online and in-person at shows.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a smooth road overall, but one of the hardest things about starting your own publication is the amount of time and organization that goes into scheduling content ahead of time. You have to keep very up-to-date on new releases and shows that are happening in the scene to make sure that everything you post is relevant.

Another ongoing struggle is that all of our contributors are volunteers and most of them are college students, which means it’s hard to have them write articles at certain times of the year, like around finals. When I’m low on content, I usually put together articles myself to fill the empty spaces in the content schedule, which takes a lot of time on my end.

Please tell us more about your publication.
ALTANGELES started as an online music publication but has grown to become more of a community. We focus on the Southern California alternative music scene and publish many different kinds of articles and content including album reviews, artist features, interviews, photo galleries, and playlists. We pride ourselves on showcasing smaller upcoming local artists and sharing underground music from all around SoCal. When we started back in May of 2018, there really weren’t any other outlets online that exclusively covered this scene. Everything we do is for the love of music.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite childhood memories is watching music videos with my dad. When I was really little, we would watch music videos all the time for artists like Kings of Leon, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and The White Stripes. I think that’s how I found my passion for music, from knowing all these songs that my dad would show me. I remember my dad buying me the Queen: Greatest Hits album and I played it on my pink Hello Kitty CD player on repeat for weeks.
