Today we’d like to introduce you to Donegan McCuaig.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After getting fired from an apartment management job in 2008 I wound up in the Fashion District of Downtown LA staying with my friend. He was living in a warehouse. I connected with the landlord there and start renting warehouse space to artists and filled the building up to 100% occupancy. I decided I liked what I was doing so I continued at it and looked for more clients.
Eventually I accumulated over $30,000 in credit card debt and realized I had failed. I went back into apartment management, paid off the debt, and got fired again. I came back to DTLA in 2012 deciding that it was either success as a broker in DTLA or death. I couldn’t imagine another job I could do that wouldn’t make me feel like killing myself. Success was one option, the other was I literally was going to fly to Thailand, party as long as I could, and kill myself once I ran through my credit cards. I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. I decided to try commercial real estate in Downtown LA again.
In order to minimize my overhead I lived in my car for 7 months while starting the business back up again. From there, I leased an office and slept on the couch for 31 months. From there, I moved into an apartment. My income has about doubled every year since I started back in Downtown LA. My company was voted #1 Commercial Real Estate Brokerage in DTLA in 2015 and 2016 by readers of the LA Downtown News. I’m ranked extremely high on Google search results for commercial real estate in Downtown LA. Since 2009 I’ve leased to over 100 commercial tenants. Now I have about 20 listings. I guess you can say I have succeeded. I’m glad I didn’t choose Thailand.
Has it been a smooth road?
I use to say it didn’t matter to me at all that I was living in my car or whatever. But for a long time afterward, when I thought about it too much I found myself crying. It was hard being at that point, feeling so alone. But strength is only achieved through hardship. The experience made me really competitive, aggressive, hardened, and quick to take advantage of opportunities when I see them. It’s been a matter of survival for me, not of success. When your life depends on it, you’ll do anything to succeed.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the realestateLA.com story. Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in commercial real estate brokerage in Los Angeles, especially DTLA. We also help people buy and sell homes in LA. What sets us apart is our ability to reach large numbers of people through social media and internet advertising to help sellers and landlords get exposure to what they have available for sell or for lease. How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see our industry becoming more influenced by technology to help people quickly and easily search for property that meets their needs.
