Meet Dominik van Wyk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominik van Wyk.

Dominik, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a South African actress, singer and songwriter living in America. My journey in acting started at the age of six years old. It went from an extramural activity to one of my subjects in high school leading up to my Bachelor’s Degree in Dramatic Arts and a Conservatory in Acting for Film at The New York Film Academy in Los Angeles. Along with this passion, I have always combined my love for singing and started my professional vocal training at age 13. I also sang in the school choir, majored in Musical Theatre at University and it leads to me becoming a certified vocal teacher. At age 21, I packed my bags and left for Los Angeles to fulfill my childhood dream of being an actor and singer.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am extremely grateful and blessed on my journey. I believe the biggest contributing factor to this is definitely having a great support system of family, friends and an extensive network. I see obstacles and challenges as opportunities and lessons. Honestly, the journey in the arts isn’t always easy. It requires a lot of patience with yourself and others. I myself have gone through the times of disbelief in myself, comparison and critical self-talk, and it is such and easy trap to fall into in our society. I do believe however, that anything in life can be fixed with a positive mindset and by being protective of where you allow your energy to go. I am still very young and will always be eager to learn more.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am mostly known as an actor and singer and I would say that me being a South African with a specific accent definitely sets me apart. I always believe it is important to be a student of life. I am always learning and becoming powerful through knowledge. I do also believe in keeping things as truthful to you as possible; never forget where you come from and your story as this will differentiate you. I would say I am most proud of the courage I had to move to a country I have never visited and made it my home. As an artist, it is wonderful to sometimes look back just to notice how far you have come and I believe in celebrating these small victories. Apart from this, I am proud of all of the films I have featured in and the experience I have gained in front and behind the camera. In the near future, my dream is to star in an action film and would welcome any opportunity to do so. I am also proud of my vocal album that I am currently working on- so be on the lookout!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
To be a mountain firm in your beliefs, unshakable and trusting that the rest will fall in place. My parents always quoted this line to my brother and I: “If you fall, it is important to get up again, even if you crawl for a little while, but you need to get up.” This has been a phrase I would refer to throughout my journey. As many others, I have a daily choice to make it a great day or not. For me personally, I choose to make everyday my day, no matter the reality of the situation. As with any dream, not only is it beautiful to have it, but I have learnt that the best way to achieve what I want is by sometimes releasing my grip on it a bit – not being so “desperate” to achieve things now, but rather having a detached certainty is what allows for it to come together. After I applied this quality to my life, all aspects of it became more abundant.
