Meet Dmitry Romanyukha of VantageBP in Downtown Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dmitry Romanyukha.

Thanks for sharing your story with us, Dmitry. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I was born in Germany and raised in Europe. After getting my second degree in Technical Engineering and Master’s Degree in Psychology, I’ve started my career at the world-famous marketing agency Grey In my spare time, in-between promo campaigns – I was learning software development and front-end frameworks. By the time I was looking for my next challenge – I had decided to move from marketing into IT. I’ve managed to grow very fast, combining my advanced skills in software development to allowing me to communicate and collaborate with developers and designers. At the same time, knowledge in psychology was helping me deal with people and solve the conflicts inside of the team. As a result of all my hard work, I had my first grey hair, and I got promoted. But after running the department, as Digital Account Director, on top of all my experiences before – I was finally ready to quit and decided never to work on the agency side again.

Not long afterward, I launched my very first startup – JetMe. An amazing and almost romantic story about launching the Uber for Private Jets. You can read that part of the story here: we were even mentioned during the 7th Annual Crunchies Awards in San Francisco (see picture). The first startup was a great experience, but my team and I made a few operational mistakes that eventually forced us to close the company, and I moved from Saf Francisco to the city of Angels to start fresh again. Even as a kid, I moved a lot, flying over the ocean, changing schools faster than countries, making new friends, and also learning three languages. I do recall being excited about my next big challenge ahead.

Over the past four years: I never worked a day on the agency side and mainly was a part of the founding teams for various startups, wearing different hats, and launching complex and fascinating products with some very smart people over the years. Even that professionally, I was happy with my growth, and on a personal note, I was pleased with my life in the city of angels – I always felt like I am missing something essential. In essence, I was chasing the idea to join a team that thrilled to make a difference, product that can change or at least improve the lives around us.

And one sunny day, I’ve met Derick and Dylan – founders at VantageBP. The story behind their business is inspiring on many levels – well, it’s all started as a luxury retail product having the distribution network choosing the counterfeit because it is cheaper. After many days and night of searching a solution to solve the problem, after spending many hours meeting with lawyers – they’ve come up with the idea that can work. Long story short – after the first few weeks, they were able to remove every single counterfeit from 4 different marketplaces.

Today VantageBP is the brand protection SaaS platform that helps eliminate counterfeits and deal with unauthorized and grey sellers. Have you ever heard about beef jerky, arriving from the marketplace, but being expired and covered in mold? Have you heard about fake electronics that start a fire due to chip and unsafe implementation? Here at VantageBP, we help brands to protect their brand name online, make sure that consumers are getting top quality and legit products from authorized distributors.

Has it been a smooth road?
I am grateful to have a fantastic journey with roadblocks and potholes on my way, with essential lessons I’m learning. But I’ll have a chance to start from the begging – I would not change a thing.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the VantageBP story. Tell us more about the business.
At VantageBP, we’re the first line of defense for stopping unauthorized resellers.

We work with the World’s best brands to eliminate counterfeits, identify rogue resellers, and enforce unauthorized sales across 100 online marketplaces, social media platforms, and 3rd party websites – all around the World. With over 2.3 million successful infringement removals and counting, we have the track record and experience to prove it.

I am wearing multiple hats, how it’s usually happening in the startups. My primary responsibility is Product Management to make sure that we have outstanding software that brings value to our clients. And to accomplish that – I am in charge of all internal operations and project management. Lately, my to-do list got overwhelmed, and I am inactive search for an assistant.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Even that it is great to see how some marketplaces are trying to fight the counterfeit problems on them – it is not getting us closer to the result on a global scale. Because we live in a world of chasing profits – one marketplace will always win if another market will block all the grey sellers. Only if all the marketplaces join the fight together – we can get to some results.

The growth of video-apps is already creating a huge opportunity to sell fake online and stay almost incognito. Brand Protections services must become more flexible and provide cross-platform solutions.
