Meet DJ Pryor

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Pryor.

Hi DJ, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My mother had me when she was 13 years old. Naturally, she made a lot of young choices. Through many obstacles and challenges that I was facing at the time, I had to find an outlet to escape what I was feeling inside and I found that in making other people laugh. As an adult, it works for me but for young DJ, it simply meant that I was what we call the Class Clown. I had one teacher that had a true passion for her students. Ms. Brown, she went out of her way to learn my story and realized that me telling jokes was an outlet from what I was facing at home. So she thought outside the box and made a deal with me that if I completed my work she would give me the last 10 mins to entertain the class. Between discovering Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy in my grandparent’s record player and VCR and Mrs. Brown, I discovered that I wanted to be on tv screen as an actor and stand-up comedian. Ultimately, Comedy saved my life.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Over my lifetime, I have had many different obstacles and challenges to face. In my younger years, I was abused physically, mentally and even verbally. I was able to make it through that obstacle course with the help of my step-father, whom I call my father. Overcoming that obstacle came the obstacle of being a young black man in the projects of a single father raising six kids which forced me to become a second father and provider to help us survive and not fall into the life of crime that I was surrounded by and too familiar with. I knew that if I wanted something different in life that I had to move different than others around me. I was forced to dig deep in finding ways to fulfill my dreams and live a life different than what I had seen. I was determined to get on stage, but I was 14 years old and there were no comedy clubs near me, but if I wanted something different I would have to move different so I would walk 6 miles one way to a club that held a comedy night called “comedy zone” in hopes that I could convince security to let me into than convince the owner to allow me to stage time. I did this every week knowing that I could be turned away and that an overall 12 mile walk in my raggedy Puma’s (shout out to Puma) could be pointless, but I was determined to be something different. That same drive and determination that I had then as a 14 year old boy is the same drive only increased that I have now as a 32 year old when I am faced with challenges. Me & my Puma’s (I can afford new ones now so they’re not raggedy) hit the pavements and stages all across the country leaving footprints.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I consider myself a true creative, or some may say just an overall entertainer. Before anything, I am husband to my beautiful wife Shanieke Pryor and the father to three amazing kids Jabari (nine years old), Kingston (three years old) & Zaria (four months). And let me tell you that is a job all in its own but when they are willing to share me, I am an Actor, Stand Up Comedian, Musician, Writer and Motivational Speaker. I am also the CEO & Founder of DJ Pryor Inc, Laughter Is Universal Productions and my recently launched Non-Profit Pryor To Change Global. I have had the pleasure of collaborating with many companies and organizations from Harvard University, United Way and Head Starts just to name a few. Through all of my work, regardless of what it is I want to make sure that when I am long and gone that I’ve caused great change…….Real Change from my existence and people will see who my superpower came from…..GOD

What matters most to you?
GOD, my family, fans and shaking up the world for the better. I am a firm believer in leaving a mark in the world. I feel as if that is why God put me here, to be a light in the middle of the dark world, not in a narcissist type way in a “we all should do our part” type of way. While being the light, I have to make sure that I am the greatest me that I can be for my family and fans.
