Meet Diana Sproveri of Lollibakes in Studio City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Sproveri.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Diana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Baking and desserts had always been a passion of mine at the holidays. Growing up in Buffalo, my grandmother baked every week and my mom was an amazing artist with chocolate – always making chocolate treats for Valentine’s Day and our Easter baskets.

While working as a screenwriter, I always had a passion for baking and desserts, often giving gifts to friends at the holidays. One year, I had a friend ask if I would put together gifts for some of her clients. That led to a birthday party. A baby shower. A wedding. Before I knew it, my holiday baking was becoming a business.

As a new mom, I took some time off from writing and decided to work solely as a pastry chef. I worked through the Cordon Bleu pastry book from front to back. Then created some of my own cookie and cupcake recipes. Because of my connections in entertainment working as a writer, I was able to get the treats in front of a few people in Hollywood. Before I knew it, I was bringing cupcakes, cookies and more to the Oscars, Emmys, Golden Globes and Grammys.

However, it was in 2007 that everything changed. A well-known actor and client asked me to create a dessert table for his friend’s bachelor party. He asked for everything on my menu, as well as asking me to create new things for the party. I had read about food bloggers making cake pops out of store bought cake mix and icing. It was for that party that created the first cake pop entirely from scratch.

After the party, I knew I was on to something. I trademarked the name Lollibakes® and the business took off. In the past eight years, Lollibakes® cake pops have appeared in over seven national magazines include Martha Stewart, Rachael Ray, Food Network, People Magazine, and are the only cake pops to be featured in Food and Wine Magazine.

Today, Lollibakes® has expanded to not only cake pops, but our entire line of dessert catering and gifts, including baking instruction which we are launching this spring.

We are happily located at BLVD Kitchen in Sherman Oaks, with our tasting and gift studio at The Flower Studio in Studio City.

Has it been a smooth road?
Owning a food business is never a smooth road. There are always challenges along the way with food deliveries, equipment failing, problems with the weather and temperature. However, that’s also what makes the business exciting and keeps you on your toes.

The biggest hurdle as an entrepreneur is finding a balance with your personal life. As a new mom, I did my best to make sure that always came first. I still do today. Loving your job makes your life happy, and having a happy personal life keeps you in love with what you do. Once you realize that it all works together, tackling the challenges and obstacles gets a lot easier.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Lollibakes® by Diana Sproveri is a dessert catering and gifting business. Cake pops are our specialty, but we’re also known for pulling together dessert tables for large events throughout the entertainment industry.

I’m most proud that we have stayed true to who we are. We have kept the gourmet ingredients and foregone the short cuts in making our desserts. It results in a delicious product that has stood the test of time.

What sets us apart is our elegant baked goods. We have always tried to make every cake pop, cupcake, confection or cookie a work of art. Simple ingredients. Classic recipes with modern design.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles has been a big part of why the company has been successful. It’s a city that celebrates life. Parties. Giving to others. It seems there is always a reason for celebration in Los Angeles, and desserts are happily apart of that.

Los Angeles is a city that has always been good to entrepreneurs. As long as you find your niche and your neighborhood, LA is great place to start.
