Today we’d like to introduce you to Devra Swiger.
Devra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started to teach Pilates in 2000. Prior to that, I was teaching a variety of fitness method and got very tired of it as I felt the movement was sloppy and ineffective. I first wrote an article about Pilates for an on-line fitness journal and as part of the article, I interviewed the only Pilates teacher at that time in Charlotte, NC. I fell in love with Pilates right away. I studied with her for a while and then when on to get national certification with Polestar Pilates. Since that time, I have completed a host of other programs and certifications.
My clientele consists of people of all ages and fitness levels. I seem to do best with people who are a bit older and trying to get into shape. I sometimes call my program ‘anti-aging fitness’ which seems to suit what I do.
I currently see privates and duets in my home studio in Orange County. I seem to have great success with people who are limited in their movement, have some lower back pain, are tight or just need a program that works for them.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I started with a more traditional approach, went to a more contemporary, back to traditional and now I am more contemporary because it works better for my clients. I tried to use a more classical method with my clients, but it just didn’t work. That was tough on me because I was convinced that this was the best way to go. I was wrong about that, but when I finally found what worked best I was able to work more successful with clients.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Ab-Solutely Pilates – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I teach Pilates and I practice The Rossiter System of pain relief. I am currently one of the only Rossiter coaches in Orange County and one of the few in the entire state. My style of Pilates is also more client oriented than may other teachers. I don’t feel the need to conform to any predetermined style.
