Meet Devon Taylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devon Taylor.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey has been full of loops, turns, halts, and adventures. When I was four years old, my dad was a paramedic and had all these reference books he would use to study. I would pull them all out and ask, “what’s this?” “How did that happen”. My parents thought I was going to work as a doctor because I was always so curious about wounds (in his books, tv shows, real life, etc.). Who knew I’d be making them!

Growing up, I had no connections to the film or beauty industry, so it didn’t click that being a makeup artist was a job, let alone that I could create special effects. So, I kept that as a hobby. Halloween has always been my life, so I’d go ALL OUT.

Long story short, my life has included jobs working in a mine while trying to put myself through college, attempting to become a preacher, which lead to me being an Addictions counselor, to the final click of Makeup Artist.

Right before the lockdown happened, I was scheduled for my state board test to become an esthetician as well. I wanted to add to my skill set, and having a deeper understanding of skin was really important to me. Also, those of us in the film industry know that the jobs come in waves. So being able to add esthetic services on top of makeup is awesome!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Oh no, not at all. Don’t get me wrong, I have been very blessed, but I think many would agree that the freelance life is not for the faint of heart.

Things from trying to book enough jobs to be about to pay rent, to the entirety of 2020, there have been a lot of… Let’s call them unplanned adventures.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a makeup artist and soon to be esthetician!

When it comes to makeup, my focus is Tv & Film. I do both beauty and special effects, and really adore doing Period Specific beauty and Realistic Gore special effects.

When it comes to esthetics, I love giving facials! I’m building up that side of the business, but once that is ready to launch it is going to have a slightly Geek Meets Spooky vibe lol.

What were you like growing up?
I was EXTREMELY shy! My mom would physically push me into a group because I would freeze up. She always told me, “You’ll never get anywhere by being shy”. And for me, that was very true.
