Meet Devin Pietschmann of Golden Threads

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Pietschmann.

Devin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My love of Vintage really began around age 13. I found an old garbage pail kids tee shirt at a local thrift shop and it ignited the love of the “hunt/find”. In high school, I would go to what I referred to as “church” on Sundays which was the $1 Jet Rag parking lot sale. I’m not sure if that still happens. It was so good! I got a corduroy jacket there that I loved so much. I have s photo of me somewhere wearing both the tee and the corduroy jacket! I would also shop at Squaresville after school. That shop is still amazing to this day.

I started thrifting things for myself and friends regularly throughout high school and college, eventually starting a small collection I kept in a bin. Doing this helped me become well-versed in different eras of fashion. I dreamed of one day having a business where I could travel throughout the country picking vintage along the way… While working as a stylist in the fashion industry and hating it, I decided to take a plunge and start selling vintage full time. Fast forward six years and I’m doing what I love. I now sell out of my showroom space in Glassell Park!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never been a smooth road. I think with any job where you work for yourself there are obstacles and challenges. For one, you end up working so much and not knowing how to prioritize time or remember to take important breaks. There are no paid vacations. Taking time off usually means losing money. Also, the first few years were about keeping my head above water financially speaking. Like any job that’s new, It’s a learning curve and eventually, you learn through trial and error. I had months with very little generated income- had moments where I questioned if this was the right career path. Ultimately I decided it was!

Please tell us about Golden Threads.
Golden Threads is a women’s (and some men’s) vintage clothing business. The Golden Threads customer seamlessly oscillates between casual, fun and formal. Not too serious but also pretty chic and classy. My customers are savvy about fashion but also care about the bigger picture and shopping sustainably. I’m proud of building this little business from popping up at tiny markets to having a little showroom and doing amazing shows like Current Affair and Pickwick Vintage. I don’t really know what sets me apart from the rest, but I try to adhere to what I’m drawn to aesthetically. I don’t really follow fashion trends too much… Classic silhouettes are my favorite.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Spending summers in Yosemite cabins with my parents and my childhood best friend and his family. Actually if I’m being honest, the drive there was the most exciting. My friend’s mom had one of those old Volvo wagons with the seats in the very back that faced the opposite direction. We would spend the entire drive making faces at the other drivers who would either enjoy it or be extraordinarily annoyed by us. Then we would shoot them with our radar guns.
