Into her second year of undergrad schooling, she realized her calling and the need to help vulnerable individuals who have limited resources. By enduring through the required education, with just ten courses left, she is currently scheduled to obtain her Doctorate of Social Work Degree, November 2022. After being raised by a single parent of five, Bernice Grigsby, who was a survivor of domestic violence and a phenomenal woman who has assisted with her children with obtaining their Masters, and Ph.D., Destiny Grigsby, knew her calling would be to tell her story when starting her very own nonprofit organization in 2016.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey was never easy for me, in fact in 2015 changed my life! I went from being happy, healthy, fierce, & confident to sick, broken, depressed, anxious and suffering with low self-esteem. This was the year anxiety & depression snuck up on me. This was the year I became a single mom and was in and out of court fighting a horrifying custody battle. This was the year where stress took a toll over my life, and my doctor prescribed my anxiety medication. This was the year where I realized how much anger and hurt I had been living with. This was the year I gave up everything, took a leap of faith and moved me and my daughter out of state to regain my life back. No businesses, in 2015, only had a bachelor’s degree at this time, had a great job, and a beautiful toddler. Let me tell you how awesome my God is!

Today, I say proudly I am more than a conqueror, but a woman of God, who was put on this earth to pay it forward, by sharing my testimonies with other queens who were once in my shoes, lost hope, and have known one to turn to for support. At the age of 30, I’m honored to say I’m a Doctor of Social Work Candidate, CEO of Our Place Healing Hearts, founder of an all-natural soy candle line that focuses on a holistic healing approach, #BlackGirlRock Therapist in training, community activist, single mom of one, loyal friend, and wonderful coach to young adolescent girls and adult women. I say that to say, even through the storm, things only got better! Keep your head up.

The organization is a 501c(3) organization founded by me. I have substantial experience working with individuals of all ages and have been successful over the past four years in showcasing the abilities to help the women and children of the community. I have obtained my Bachelors, Masters, and currently working on my Doctorate. With the help of wonderful board of directors were working towards enhancing the battered women so that they can take back their power and provide for their families and children.

Objectives for our organization to support our company mission:

The coaching aspect of the organization sheds light during virtual lessons, where women & children are encouraged to share feelings and struggles as they openly discuss important issues in a safe and supportive environment. They are given the opportunity to feel empowered, gain self-awareness, develop coping strategies, improve problem-solving skills, understand that they are not alone, and learn to make healthy decisions all while accomplishing short term goals.

I am most proud of the level of dedication and time the board of directors have committed to servicing our communities. Our board of directors our educated, fierce, entrepreneurs, mothers, wife’s, and still manage to show up and show out every single time. I am also proud of the connections and sisterhood that has been built amongst the women & children within our organization. It makes me happy to see them coming together and turning their pain and hurt into life accomplishments. It’s a blessing to be able to be a blessing to others. Rather it’s a listening ear when our women our left without hope or pushing them to accomplish that goal, our organization is committed to healing hearts so that our youth won’t have to grow up recovering from their past life & our victims & survivors shift the power of their lives back into their own hands.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I like to hold myself accountable by practicing integrity. I’m honest and not afraid to hold back anything. I want women & children to feel comfortable enough to trust in me and know that I am here for them. Building rapport, no judgment, and understanding I too was once in their shoes. If I can do it, so can you.
