Meet Destiny “d-RARE” Chavez of RARE Training in Whittier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny “d-RARE” Chavez.

Destiny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born and raised in Whittier, my Mom had a tribe of five kids. Single mother, making sure to love and cherish each and every one of us no matter the circumstances. Growing up for me, everything had to be ea®️ned, there were no hand-outs and I believe it’s a true blessing to learn that at a young age!!

Being the 3rd born out of five, I had two older brothers and of course, all I knew was “hanging out with the boys!” From cheerleading to baseball, wanting to skateboard, and then came basketball! Basketball is what made me who I am today! Without basketball, I wouldn’t be d®️iven to be the BEST I can be‼️

Fast forward to high school and I met the greatest coach ever! Coach Willie Pittman decided to put ME, a freshmen, on the varsity basketball team for Whittier High. At this point of my life, I knew I wanted to play basketball forever and I also knew I had to hold myself even more accountable! It was time to ®️ise!

Highschool ball with Coach Pittman is by far the greatest learning experience and life-changing moment for me! He taught me leadership, perseverance, and most importantly, how to be a 4th quarter th®️eat! I got my nickname “Money-Time” from him because I would show-up for those clutch moments when it mattered the most!

Going onto college, I graduated from Hope International University with a Bachelor’s in Business & Sports Management, and also a minor in Bible; all while on a basketball scholarship. Basketball in college was by far a blessing in disguise for me! I say this because that’s when I knew being a “basketball player” wasn’t my futu®️e!!

I asked myself “what am I going to do now?” I still loved the game so I stepped into coaching high school ball, reffing on the side, and just still involved. During that time I started hitting the gym to keep my physique up, but then I started to love the gym. The gym, the weights, the building of muscle was my new founded love! I realized how my body was transforming and I probably was only a year in from going to the gym, consistently! I thought to myself, “If I could show progress in my body, year after year; if I can push through the pain because it takes pain to build strength; If I can hold myself accountable every day; I’m ahead of the game, I can do anything, I’m ®️ARE‼️

Today, I am working for one of the greatest organizations known to youth, called PLAYWORKS! I am a ®️ecess Coach for Fairgrove Academy Elementary and I love how I just get to teach these kids social and emotional skills through the art of PLAY! I also am a personal t®️ainer at ViiiNO Systems, located in Cerritos. So when I’m not with the kids, I am helping my clients reach their fitness goals and enjoying the process with them. If you can’t have fun with it, then what’s the point of doing it? Speaking of fun, this year (2019) I had the honors to co-host for a podcast called LockerRoom Talk! A podcast that’s a fitness resource for anyone at any level. Shout-out to Preezy and Da’re for putting me on‼️

Has it been a smooth road?
For my journey to be smooth, Ha! I wouldn’t be where I’m at today! And I’m talking about mindset, not about all the materialistic things. My outlook in life changed as soon as I realized that I am not average, I don’t want to keep living check by check, I don’t want to be in the same place that I was a year ago! We all gotta start at some point and it’s never too late to make a change! What drove me to be better was first, get out of relationships that are not helping you! Love yourself first before you can love anyone else. Appreciate your parents/guardians. Learn from their failures to their achievements, but don’t follow their path because you have your own path in life!

When my Aunt passed away and seeing my cousins hurt, made me realize it’s time, it’s time to make no more excuses, who am I compared to them (my cousins) to make excuses on why I can’t get shit done! I was fi®️ed up! In order to see a change, YOU MUST BE THE CHANGE! It starts with YOU and if my family can see my growth, then I just hope it trickles down to their own growth and they fulfill their purpose in this life! And like always, if I didn’t have God in my life, I wouldn’t feel okay with being alone! In this journey, when you speak to HIM out loud, it’s a beautiful thing because you start to see life in a different light! He doesn’t promise all the answers, just that he’ll direct your path with unconditional love!

We’d love to hear more about your work.
RARE was first started during my fitness journey in late 2015! As an athlete, you tend to miss that competitiveness, that chip on your shoulder that states, “I am better than you!” So naturally, I will walk in the gym, scope out the area, make sure I have all the equipment I needed and just headphones ongoing hard at every rep and set!! To where, people around me are just looking at me working out and some are using it as motivation, while others are just enjoying the show.

This is me, still finding my identity and realizing I am different than these people, but my difference doesn’t make me any better than them! They can be a better version of themselves as well but in their own way! So RARE started to become a word to where everybody is Rare, everybody can be RARE, but there has to be a formula in order to get there!

R ise to the occasion

A dapt to change

R each beyond your limits

E volve physically, mentally, spiritually

Rising to the occasion is the first step of making a change… It’s the most important step because it must be a commitment to yourself first! No need to tell anybody else, but if it holds you more accountable, then so be it, share it with your loved ones.

Adapting to change is the second step in learning to become versatile! Things are going to happen, life doesn’t stop because you decided to be on this journey! Your path to success is going to have things that are going to make you say “forget it I’m done” or say “let’s keep going until I see the finish line”. I learned having patience will help you and that failure is more of a lesson then a loss! Be open-minded to that change, and stay FEARLESS.

Reach beyond your limits. This is the same as taking risks! If you limit yourself from taking risks, then how are you going to ever know your full potential? Be unlimited, meaning if the opportunity presents itself and you feel like you’re not ready but it’s right in your face! Do it, risk it, reach above and beyond! Seize the opportunity because you are only one opportunity away from your dreams being met!!

Evolve physically, mentally, spiritually! Health is wealth so invest in your health! Take away the bad things that are NOT helping you and implement more things that will help BETTER you! Self-care must be practiced in this life today. We all have one body-one mind-one spirit, so feed your one life with healthy food, positive energy, and honorable intentions. It’s time to heal each other.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is a place where creatives can express themselves and not be judged too harshly. Compared to other places, there isn’t so much opportunity than there is out here. However, that also means there is plenty of competition and at the same time, you can get caught up with all the distractions here in the city. It is imperative to be a step ahead when it comes to the business side of things.

As for me, my business falls into the health and fitness industry, so I know I am exactly where I need to be when the time comes to open my own fitness gym. The inspiration for me is everywhere in LA, especially once you figure out exactly what it is you want to fulfill. Yes, there is always room for improvement and that is to improve LA’s community. More community involvement means unity and that is how we, Angeleno’s, need to take care of one another.
