Meet Desárāi Monét

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desárāi Monét.

Dance.x.Style (Dance-and-Style) Media was created on May 25th, 2016 by a group of professional dancers & entrepreneurs. Our goal is to support, educate, and celebrate the diverse aspects of the commercial dance industry. Dancexstyle.com is the first brainchild from the group. The media platform acts as a connection to valuable industry resources, information, as well as collaborating with other professionals and brands. Based out of Los Angeles, CA, Dance.x.Style Media works with both the New York, NY and Atlanta, GA markets.

Dance.x.Style Media’s creators sought to create a space where dancers could easily disseminate information. Dancexstyle.com was then born to then fill the gaps between the basic information on the internet and necessary working knowledge that only current and retired professionals possess. We are also embarked on this venture to help connect up and coming generations with industry pioneers.

Dance.x.Style Media is the source for up-to-date dance industry knowledge. This platform allows the pre-professional dancer access to adequate information to help plan and shape their career.

Has it been a smooth road?
To quote the phenomenal poet, singer, memoirist, and civil rights activist Maya Angelou: You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. With that said creating this entity has not been been easy! We’ve dealt with a pleathers of issues from finding proper funding, vetting quality information, to keeping our momentum when the world swerved and crashed during the launch.

Our saving grace is that we are dancers and creatives, so we know how to maneuver when things don’t go as planned. We are advocates for the community no matter the circumstance. We recognize that there are generations coming behind us and we’ve deemed ourselves responsible to leave something behind that will help the next dance generation advance. In passing along valuable information, we hope to solidify the efforts we’ve made with those before us to change the direction of our industry.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Dance.x.Style Media specializes in creating and sharing digital content for dancers pursuing professional dance careers. We provide access to digestible content such as books, podcasts, YouTube videos, online educational courses (Dancer University), blog posts, Instagram Lives, Stories, & IGTV videos.

In the near future, we will be hosting community events, showcases, and wellness seminars in cooperation with other dance organizations. Just think of us as The Source Magazine for the commercial dance industry. We are defining our culture the dance culture. Our Culture | Our Way.

We are most proud that our company is comprised of and run by dancers. We’ve adopted the phrase of “keeping it all in the family” to illustrate this. We are the culture. We are building on the foundation our “OGs”. However, in the same breath the industry is still relatively new and still expanding. Due to this rapid expansion, the industry’s essence started to change and get lost. Creating Dancexstyle.com was our way to preserve the culture for future generations as older generations moved on to other endeavors.

We felt that if we didn’t do anything the industry would continue to cycle through dancers, pay rates would continue to stall out, knowledge of adequate pay would be ignored, and dancers would continue to devalue themselves. If we want the commercial dance industry to change and thrive, then we are going to HAVE to share information and experiences.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The Dance Industry is set to really see an influx of dancers showcasing various types of creative content. You will see dancers that are move into becoming musicians, painters, athletes, musical artists, educators or large levels, fitness trainers, writers, designers, creative directors, real estate investors, etc. They will be transitioning their dance platforms into other types of business ventures.

Smart dancers gain a lot of contacts as they pursue their main, but as they meet other creatives and develop other interests overtime they then will begin to leverage their audiences if they haven’t already. If you watch how Black Hollywood all knows each other, it reflects the same way in our community. Dancers are watching everything they come across when they are involved in big production projects. In addition to being in these spaces first-hand YouTube provides supplemental information to support their endeavors, me included. Us dancers are turning our “hobbies” into bonafide businesses.
