Meet Derek Emery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Emery.

Derek, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started out as a car salesman in 1982 at the age of 19. As I was selling cars I was still attending college and eventually graduated in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in Criminology from the University of Maryland. I was then promoted to used car manager at the Nissan dealer I was working for. At that time, I was considered the youngest used car manager for a franchised car dealer in the country. It was this early training that I became very well skilled in used vehicle acquisition and sales.

After seven years with Nissan, I opened my own company primarily purchasing vehicles from celebrity clientele in the Los Angeles area. With this initial business model, I realized that average consumers like myself would also benefit from a custom service where they can sell a vehicle to a company that pays more than a dealer trade-in price without the hassle of private party sales right from their home.

As the Internet kicked in I created as a platform where a consumer can get a fast phone quote on a vehicle they would like to sell and a friendly appraiser would travel to their home or office to purchase it on the spot.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has actually been a very tough road to drive on. competes directly with multiple billion-dollar companies that are publicly traded on the stock market as well as multi-million dollar companies that have raised an enormous amount of money from venture capital firms. Through trial and error, I have figured out that the key to success is speed. We can dispatch an appraiser within minutes to someone’s home or office and most of our competitors make the consumer drive their vehicle to them. Seeing this company grow from a one man band to a company with 40 full-time employees and buying and selling 10,000 used vehicles per year is quite exciting. We are currently looking for venture capital money to expand nationwide.
