Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Roacho-Hernandez.
Denise, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had a love for baking. Growing up I would come up with “recipes” and try to get my nephews to test them out… until my mom would walk into the kitchen & yell at me for using my nephews are guinea pigs! I am just in awe at the fact how something so yummy can come out of a few ingredients.
Over the years, I continued to bake for family and close friends. Baking was always a way for me to show my love & I enjoyed every single part of the process. Baking was also a way for me to de-stress from my full-time job. As the years went on, I continued to learn new techniques watching YouTube & researching recipes.
About three years ago, I decided that I could make this into a real business. With the encouragement of friends & family, I moved forward with making my dream a reality. I started investing in myself & taking classes to improve my baking skills. Three years later, my business has grown thanks to friends and family that have referred me. My love for baking grows and grows with each order I receive.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Entrepreneurship is definitely NOT for the faint of heart! My biggest struggle, in the beginning, was definitely believing in my product. I had so many doubts about my baked good & constantly questioned myself on whether or not anyone would buy my baked goods. It was and still is very scary to put myself out there. Not everyone is going to buy your product, and that’s OKAY! You have to be prepared for rejection. Sooner or later you will knock on the right door.
I still have a full-time job & continue to work on my baking business after work. There have been days where I’ve questioned whether all my hard work & sleepless nights are worth it. However, getting messages from customers telling me how much they loved my work makes it all worthwhile. Everything takes hard work & if you’re willing to put in the work, it’s all possible!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Deelightful Treats story. Tell us more about the business.
Deelightful Treats specializes in custom baked goods for all your special occasions. This includes cupcakes, cake pops, custom sugar cookies, and Churro Cheesecake.
My Churro Cheesecake is definitely my best seller & is what I’m best known for. People are always skeptical when they hear the name, but are hooked once they try it!
I pride myself in making all my customers feel special & truly listen to them when they place a custom order. I don’t want a one time customer, I want a lifetime customer. Many large bakeries do not take the time to get to know their customers. They simply want to sell you a cake or cookie. I wouldn’t be anywhere without my loyal customers, which is why I want to make every custom order an experience.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I really don’t think anything is by luck, but I do believe in fate. The right people will always be placed in front of you at the perfect time. However, it is completely up to you to put in the work. You can’t expect someone to promote you & for all the clients to simply come to you. It’s up to you to create a great product & build a good rapport with your clients.
