Meet Denise “Deedee” Hubbard-Baxter of D’Essential Candles in South LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise “Deedee” Hubbard-Baxter.

Denise “Deedee”, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
What started out as making gifts for family and friends shortly turned into a business and it has been a life-changing experience. I have always been a creative person with so many talents but found myself suppressing some of them. So, when I started D’Essential Candles a year ago, I knew that I have found my passion. Seeing the way customers feel when they are smelling my candles and then hearing just how amazing my candles are means a lot to me.

During this past year, I have been a vendor at many events getting my brand out and meeting some amazing people. Any chance that I get to do an event, I jump on it. I love talking to people about the benefits of soy candles and networking with people. I have always been business savvy but being an entrepreneur takes on a hold new definition of things. I am learning on a daily basis and I am loving this ride that I am on.

All of my candles and have meaningful names… I name the candles by the way they make me feel along with a vision that I have in that moment. I started with only one scent, which is Mimosa. I have to say that this is my baby because it was one of the first ones that I made. As of today, I have a total of seven scents-Serenity, Paradise, Cashmere, Blossom, Tranquility and Namaste. I will be adding more scents to the collection soon. I also have special orders like gift boxes, special scents, party favors, etc. I always do my best to accommodate a customer’s request.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s never easy starting and/or maintaining a business. My first step was learning the different types of waxes that are out there and learn as much as I could about the industry and how I could create a brand that will set me apart. I took a candle making class years ago and knew that I would start a small business. I gained confidence and here I am years later with an active online store, I am learning different ways to produce my products.

There will always be challenges. I look at every challenge in a positive way and ask myself “what is this here to teach me?. I do set goals but I set daily intentions as this inspires and motivates me to achieve my purpose.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
D’Essential Candles are handmade soy candles infused with essential oils hand-poured in small batches.

I use 100% soy wax with no additives and is non-toxic, biodegradable, all-natural renewable source. The wax burns at a much cooler temperature than traditional wax and has a longer burning time. All of the fragrances that I use are phthalate-free and are infused with 100% essential oils. My goal is to make natural candles with amazing scents. All products are made with love.

I am most proud of is the fact that I have two young nieces that look up to me and one of my nieces will go to almost every event where I am a vendor. She is 13 and is also creative but needs that push and that is where I come in. I have her assisting me with making products and now she is on her own path with being an entrepreneur.

“D’Essential Candles Are So Essential To Have”

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always a creative-artistic individual. I loved to read books, write poetry, draw and hang with friends. I have always been strong-minded and determined.

Personality-wise, I am passionate, enthusiastic, caring and more importantly confident. My parents said that if I wanted something in life that I will go after it and get it.

In my spare time, I still read and write poetry.

Who knows maybe I’ll be an author one day. (I am manifesting that)
