Meet Dejan Tubic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dejan Tubic.

Dejan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Bosnia in 1990. I moved to Germany at the age of 2, then to the US at the age of 8. Starting in my teen years, I started to training in all styles of dance, but with a heavy focus on Hip Hop and Jazz Funk. After graduation High School, I moved to L.A. to pursue a career in dance and choreography. By the time I was 20 years old, my YouTube videos started going viral. This gave me a platform to share my work to people all over the world. I started dancing, teaching and setting choreography all over the world working with some incredible artists and dancers. Now at 30, My focus is on traveling and teaching. I am currently touring with an amazing dance convention called Dance Makers, and I continually teach at various workshops around the world.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are many ups and downs when first moving to LA. At 18, you don’t become a “professional dancer” first. You become an “adult” first. So managing a job, bills, and paying your training becomes a huge learning lesson early on. You have to have thick skin to really accept all of the “No’s” you receive at auditions. So many times, you will feel defeated and have to constantly bring your self up. But, when the Yes does come, that yes eventually overweighs the “No’s”.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel my most important characteristic is my willingness to connect and talk to people. Everyone wants to feel good and to feel happy, so I try to bring that mood into every job, rehearsal and conversation that I have. Life can be stressful, so I try to make all my classes and conversations a light one with a hint of terrible dad-jokes. I always say when I get rehired on a job, it probably wasn’t because of my talent, it was because we just had a fun time together. 🙂
