Meet Deja Patten of Beatbydej in Carson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deja Patten.

Deja, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey with makeup started in 2014 the year I graduated highschool. My senior year, I started wearing powder foundation and mascara. I didn’t know much about makeup and back then I didn’t Have much knowledge nor was the beauty industry as big as it is now.

2014 – I started practicing on myself after highschool and just learning the basics of knowing how to do a natural face. I was Always into skin so my makeup has always been very light.

2015 – I would practice on my friends for fun and just to get good at doing natural looks. I never wanted to be a makeup artist but my friends at the time encouraged me to do others and soon made me make an Instagram page. I had a few clients but I was still very shy and uncomfortable to do others.

2016 – I started getting clients around prom season and was very nervous but that year was very good. I did get a wedding September 2016 which I wasn’t very confident in doing but they loved their makeup.

2017/2018 – Those years were my prom years. My business kept growing and growing. I soon got comfortable with my work and doing big events. Prom season was always the busiest time for me. I would be booked up for three months straight. I did more on photoshoots, worked with great models and photographers. I was traveling to LA a lot.

June 2019 – I made the decision to move to LA and grow my business. I came from the Bay Area where there was a limit on how much you can achieve in the beauty industry. Business was slow at first but it picked up tremendously after a few months. Since I’ve been here, I’ve worked with a lot of YouTubers and did makeup for events such as the BET awards.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There were a lot of obstacles and challenges moving to a new city and not knowing anyone. I had to start from the ground up and build my clientele also learning how to market myself better. There were slow months where I didn’t have no clients. I got a job in the meantime that also had my time limited but I stepped out on faith again and quit my job and right after I began to get booked!

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m known as “Beatbydej”. I’m a makeup artist that’s been found makeup for five years now. What makes me apart from others is that I don’t limit myself, I’m always eager to learn something new or try new things. If the right opportunity presents itself, I will get up and go where ever. I’m not afraid of failure because you have to fail before you succeed in anything you do. I’m proud of myself because I didn’t quit when times got hard for me. I kept going Every step of the way.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family and friends played a big role in helping me get to where I am. My friends keep me on track when I’m down and hard on myself. They never let me fall off and keep their eyes close on me. My family show me love and support regardless of any decision I make. There was a lot of people that was hard on me because they seen my potential and drive. Also, my clients have supported me since day one. I have A lot of clients I’ve been doing makeup on since 2014 and they support me even all the way in LA.
