Meet Debbie Saroufim of Tough Mamas in Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debbie Saroufim.

Debbie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was a personal trainer who went to my client’s houses. The majority of my clients were mothers, and we would work out while their kids were napping. Working out a postpartum body takes extra consideration, especially for the new mom. Bodies aren’t the same after childbirth, nor should they be. They did something extraordinary, and society has some ridiculous standards for what a postpartum body should look like, and how quickly a new mom should “bounce back”.

After working with one of my clients, Nico Juber, for over a year, we found ourselves pregnant at the same time. (This would be her second, my first). While I coached her through a fit pregnancy, she coached me in preparation for motherhood. We talked about how working out with a little baby in the house would prove to be a challenge. She asked me if I’d ever thought of starting a program for moms to work out from the comfort of their home, watching a video online, in a simple to use way (use it or lose it) – and Tough Mamas was born.

We are complete workouts for moms at any stage in the game. We come out with two, completely new workouts each week, each lasting 30 minutes! We want to take the thinking out of working out. Moms have enough on their plate without worrying about which body part to focus on. We take care of all that for you. They are full body workouts, with modifications given that might not have been necessary pre-baby.

Most importantly, and what we believe separates us from other online workout routines, is while we are here to help you get fit and strong, and our clients absolutely do see results, we are focused on embracing the body you have. No two bodies are alike, and all bodies are beautiful for their own individual reasons. We encourage our mamas to enjoy the process, appreciate all that their body does, and put fitness before “diets” or “weight loss.”

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nico and I have been very fortunate in finding each other. We complement each other quite nicely. I’m the workouts and routine, she’s the marketing, tech and business side. We are very much in agreement in our philosophy, and both really understand the needs of our community. We also are both incredibly motivated to spread the message of body positivity to other moms.

When I was thrown into the world of motherhood, the hardest thing was feeling like my body wasn’t my own and finding the time to exercise.
