Meet Deandre Threatt of Triple Threatt in South LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deandre Threatt.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My back story is I have always been into fashion, mainly clothes and kickz. Even if I couldn’t afford the latest, I knew about it. I knew how much it cost, what store had it etc. I noticed I was into fashion the beginning of 9th grade. I would save my lunch money, sell candy, help neighbors take grocery in, babysit, and even help neighbors put up Christmas lights for money. I would save my money and buy Jordan’s, airmax, iceberg and whatever else was hot and fly at the time. I never wanted to be a designer per say. I wanted to be a buyer for a major department store. I tried to enroll into FIDM a few occasions, but their class schedule didn’t work with my work schedule. I liked the idea of picking out different articles of clothing and putting different pieces together to make one dope fit. I feel like fashion can be whatever you want it to be, you just have to own your look! You can put high-end items with low-end items and make a fire fit.

I started making custom painted Converse Chuck Taylor’s and Air Force ones. Then started making custom painted army jackets. One year for my oldest son’s 5th birthday, I was looking for a fit. Something different and unique, I couldn’t find anything. I checked all the local stores and online. Nothing! Then out of nowhere the idea came to me, I could start a boy’s clothing line. Now here with my boys brand Triple Threatt.

To get to where I am today, I had to do a lot of research, make a lot of mistakes, spend money on samples I never used. I’ve been fortunate to received help from some very knowledgeable people. I had no idea where to start and how to execute the ideas I had. One of my closest friends Kyle helped me out a lot pointing me in the right direction and introducing me to some creative people. My wife assists me with sewing and helping make my ideas come to light. I don’t feel I’m nowhere near where I want to be, I do know I will get there. I still have a lot to learn and a lot more I want to do. The vision is to have turn Triple Threatt into full clothing line.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Starting out, it was hard to find vendors that had quality wholesale youth sizes in certain products. A lot of places don’t have youth sizes or if they do it’s in basic product. I had to learn about the difference between screen print, heat transfer, and DTG. I had to understand not to take certain things personal in business, learn that business is business and personal is personal.

My 1st collection, I found a company that did great work. I got some dad hats done with my Robot logo on it, they came out perfect. When I got the 2nd set done, they came out wrong and didn’t look like the 1st set. When I contacted the owner of the company he told me he couldn’t make it like the last set and it was only a little off. That he didn’t see what the problem is. He stated “most people won’t notice”. If you know me, then you know I don’t care if most don’t notice, if I notice then it’s not right. He told me we weren’t a good fit and told me he would send the hats back and refund me the money.

It’s a struggle when you working a full-time job, married, and have two sons, and trying to run a business. I want to make sure I’m not taking time away from my family and money away from them. You have to spend money to make money. As much as you want to invest back into your business, you have to find a balance where you can do both. It gets hard sometimes to produce new products often, marketing, photoshoots, pop up shops, vendor events, and to have content.

Please tell us about Triple Threatt.
My company name is Triple Threatt. Part of the name came from my last name. My last name is Threatt and often people pronounce it Threat, so I ran with that and spelled it like my last name instead of Threat. Triple represents my two sons (2), and I (1) equal (=) 3 (Triple). The brand was based off my sons. It is a line of boy’s clothing with a few items for men due to a significant amount of requests for them to be included. I am the owner and creator of the brand. I’m known for my logo’s and my concept. The concept behind my brand is outer space. From the logo to the photoshoots, to the pop up shops, etc. 1st collection was a Robot, 2nd collection is a Rocket. Currently working on the 3rd collection and you have to stay tuned to see what it will be. I feel my Outer Space concept sets me apart from other brands. I am most proud of having a clothing business. It was an idea I had and I made it happen.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite childhood memories is when I was about ten years old and I got everything I wanted and more for Christmas. I got a Sega Genesis, clothes, kickz, and money. That was the best Christmas I ever had.
