Meet Dawn Givans-Lander

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Givans-Lander.

Hi Dawn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hello, and thanks for having me, am happy to be here!   Where to begin… originally from Jamaica. I came to the US in the early 80s as I wanted to explore.  After graduation from Augsburg University [ Minneapolis ]where I earned a bachelor’s degree in Communication, I explored numerous careers mostly in hospitality. Although I enjoyed and had reasonable success working in that industry, I longed for creativity and autonomy – I was restless. To my surprise, and that of my family, I enrolled in cosmetology school where I thought to learn everything about hairdressing. I learned that I really enjoy making people look good and feel good. It was not a 9-5 job, I got to create beautiful hair and watch people walk away happy and transformed.  I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist since the late 90s here in California. Throughout the many years as a hairstylist, I worked as a commissioned hairstylist in some of the top hair salons on the Westside/Beverly Hills area.  In 2020, I went from being a stylist/colorist to owning my own salon suite in the prestigious Beverly Hills Triangle called ‘LORNA DAWN’ —- a salon suite where I specialize in hair color, color correction and transformation, utilizing numerous coloring techniques; although, I do haircuts as well.  Since  my licensure in the late 90s, the hair salon industry has had a tremendous change, so much so that at times it seems the industry is being ‘watered down’ what with all the DIY platforms. But then am reminded on a regular basis that the hair industry is here to stay……take for example, the ongoing demand for hair color correction, This is big business! Not many people can master coloring and cutting their own hair.  Today,  am well proud of the work I do on my clients each and every day. I get to have an outlet to create, as well as bring joy to the faces of my clientele!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road at all. One of my greatest accomplishment was the birth of my twin boys. When I found myself a single mom with 2 babies to look after, I did not hesitate to step back from salon life to devote most of my time to raising my precious boys! With that step back from the salon, I had to literally rebuild everything from scratch – rebuild clientele, got involved in all seminars and workshops to learn all about any and everything to do with new trends in the industry.  Although I continued to work part-time on clients during the early years while raising my children, my focus was primarily on my babies who are now 19 years old fine young men headed off to college in the fall.  Am well proud of them  and all they’ve achieved academically, and as basketball athletes! They are my inspiration indeed!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I consider myself a ‘’HAIRTHERAPIST’. Let me explain: I am a cosmetologist, who specializes in hair color. Often when clients come to get their hair done, it takes anywhere from 1 1/2 to 3 hours, sometimes even longer. During these hours, there are a myriad of topics and discussions, with varying emotions —laughter, crying, as well as complete zen moments. I am happy to say that I have some of the most wonderful Clients. Many of my clients have become close friends/family. They don’t just come to get their hair done, they come to spend time with me and am very grateful and appreciative to all my lovely clients.

What does success mean to you?
Success for me is the mastery of creating a balanced work life with home life. To feel fulfilled at the end of the day. This is a journey of course……
