Today we’d like to introduce you to David Giron.
David, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Over 17 years ago I wanted to learn to tattoo. I had a few ideas about tattoos and thought that this skill would be a great addition to my skill base. I was already an accomplished graphic designer, Illustrator, and studied classic animation. I remember thinking to myself that this would be easy, “Just another medium.” Boy, was I full of myself. Tattooing is the most challenging process I have ever loved. The living skin is unlike any other medium I have worked with.
For years after my apprenticeship I worked as both a tattoo artist and a senior designer. During the normal work day, I managed the art department’s production staff and in the evenings I sought to perfect techniques as a tattoo artist. I so love the personal involvement that almost all of my clients have for their tattoos. It was in direct opposition to what I experienced working in corporate America. Many companies I designed for were more concerned of emulating other successful media campaigns instead of creating something different. The personal satisfaction I get when I finish a meaningful tattoo is indescribable. It is the driving force for me to tattoo.
I opened Parlour Tattoo Studio so an enthusiast can have a place free of an artist’s ego, flash, or speed shop. We take great pride in coming up with images that help people feel comfortable in their own skin. All our tattoos come from you. It is not about the artist, the tattoo is about you. Most everything we do is custom designed, unless it is the clients’ choice to do something that already exists. Every design does take time, and we do not rush the process. Quality takes time, and your great tattoo, that last a lifetime, is worth it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wish to say it has been easy, but that is not the case. Relocating from to the new space wasn’t the easiest. I made a few mistakes at first, abiding by city laws, and the negative stereotype of the tattoo industry has made it challenging. I happy to say that we found a home in Winnetka. And we do everything by the book.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Parlour Tattoo Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
Parlour Tattoo Studio specializes in custom tattoos. We realize that what we provide is a service. That means we do all we can to ensure you have a positive, comfortable, and personal tattoo experience. Our mission is for you love your tattoo as much as we do. To prove it, we guarantee our work for a full year. We know for certain that a fresh tattoo is not what a healed tattoo looks like. I want to give people more than enough time to be sure their tattoo is exactly what they want.
When entering Parlour Tattoo Studio you may feel that you may have come to the wrong shop. There is no flash on the walls for you to pick from, nor an attitude of, “we know what you need.” You will be greeted by Reid or myself, and asked what we can do for you. That is what we mean. We want to bring your ideas of your tattoo to fruition.
One of the things I am proud of is that everyone that has sat through a tattoo session with me shares a personal relationship. Tattooing is a semi-personal experience. I cannot speak for everyone, but I would rather go through a personal journey with a friend than someone I don’t know, or worse, someone I don’t exactly trust. Every tattoo creates a personal relationship, and there is no better way to screw that up than to start it off with lies. We will never tell you a tattoo doesn’t hurt. Nor will we tell you we are the very best there is. What you can count on is that we are honest. If you are dead set on getting your significant others name tattooed, we will more than likely try to talk you out of it. Not reflecting on your relationship, but how it can impact the rest of your life. The coolest thing about tattoos is that they are meant to be permanent. We all have that one friends that regretted getting married at a young age. It has been known for tattoos to last longer than marriages. We will look out for you in this sense. It is never about us, it is about you and your tattoos. It is normal to leave the studio with a great tattoo, fond memories, and possibly a new friend.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am one of the luckiest people in the world. I have been married to the love of my life for nearly 20 years. I am in reasonable good health, I wake up every morning, and I get to make a living with what I like to do best. Every day I get to work and tattoo my friends. And as luck would have it, you can’t find better weather than right here in Southern California where I happen to have grown up and live in. Luck has played a role my entire life, from being a street urchin kid running around the street of Los Angeles to being a business owner in the San Fernando Valley. I feel so strongly about it, most of my left foot is tattooed with the idea that, “I am lucky.”
