Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Gray and Temima Shames.
Danielle and Temima, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Women PowHer Music was created during the COVID-19 outbreak. During quarantine, we saw many panels happening but not many were focused solely on women in the music industry. We decided to create our own panel focusing on this. What started out as a small idea and one-off event turned into a week-long series each night discussing a different topic. After seeing the positive reaction on social media from our first event, we decided to continue creating these panels and build a community around the cause.
Has it been a smooth road?
Creating Women PowHer Music has not been a smooth road. In our opinion, if it’s a smooth road then you aren’t able to grow and learn from your mistakes. One of the biggest struggles for us was being taken seriously. Being that we were both college students at the start of the organization, it took a while for people to understand that this organization was not just another school project. It was important for us to show that just because one is a student doesn’t mean that they aren’t capable of starting their own business. Another bump we came across was navigating the technology due to lack of resources. In order to overcome this struggle, we utilized our network and sought advice from those around us. It is important that one isn’t afraid to seek help in order to succeed.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Women PowHer Music provides a platform for women in the music industry to share, support, and inspire each other. We are known for creating online panels and events open to the public. From this, we are able to build a community with all of our viewers. Each event is a different theme and topic, but they all focus or involve women in the industry. For example, our most recent event was an intimate songwriting session with songwriters from Kobalt Publishing and Atlantic Records. All of the participants were able to ask the songwriters questions and some lucky people got a chance to share their song with them and get their feedback. What sets us apart from others is that we focus on educating students and create events for young professionals to learn something new and to grow their network. Women PowHer Music emphasis creating your own opportunities and not waiting on someone to bring them to you.
