Meet Daniela Rey, on Starting Picsea in LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniela Rey. Daniela is a brand strategist and photographer in Los Angeles, who recently launched Picsea, a baby photography service dedicated to capturing baby’s entire first year of life in photos. Today she shares her story with us:

Daniela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I will never forget the day I found out I was pregnant. Looking at that word on a stick. ‘PREGNANT’. I couldn’t believe it so I took 6 more tests. All, of course, with the same result. It was settled. I was going to become a mother.

The shock was soon replaced by excitement.

I could NOT wait to meet my baby.

I loved her far before she was born. But seeing her for the first time changed me. I became her mother and protector. Nothing was more important than her. Every parent says it’s a very different kind of love. Hard to understand before it happens to you.

The first weeks weren’t easy. I remember healing from childbirth while caring for her non-stop needs. She would only sleep if I was holding her. I would finish changing a diaper only to find a big ol’ poop explosion.

I also remember feeling like a cow during the first days of breastfeeding!

I remember crying about it. Ugly crying.

I also remember crying when it dawned on me what I had really signed up for. A love so vulnerable. My happiness was now linked to someone else’s. A little girl with the power to bring me to my knees if something were to ever happen to her. And a prayer for life to keep her safe from harm, forever.

The first year was a hazy, sleep-deprived, daydream of love, breast milk, and dirty diapers. It all went by so fast. They call it ‘the longest shortest time’ for a reason. It feels never ending and then it just slips away.

Before I knew it, I had a talkative and energetic toddler running around. It was a brand new stage. Beautiful in its own way. But it was the end of my baby.

She’s almost 5 now, and every day I remember fewer details from those first months.

The first year I photographed everything. I have photos celebrating every new month. Photos of her eating, sleeping, sunbathing, sitting up, crawling, standing up, walking.

Think of any baby milestone. I have a photo of that.

As a trained photographer, I love the power of photos to tell a story that is long gone. But nothing compared with seeing photos of my own baby. She was growing and changing at lightning speed. I was amazed at every moment I captured. The smiles, the thinking faces, even the tears. Every frozen image added a new dimension to the beauty I was discovering in her.

I collected hundreds of baby photos.

Later I designed a photo book of her first year. And when my pregnant friends saw it, they wanted one too. So we began taking photos of their babies from birth to one.

Collecting hundreds of real-life photos to share with friends and family, to decorate their homes, and to make a book at the end of the year.

This is how Picsea was born.

I decided I needed to find a way to offer parents a cost-effective option to capture their baby’s first year. To make sure those hazy months were well documented for posterity.

But I didn’t want to be like every other photographer in the area.

During my research, I found many photographers and many complicated price lists.

There is an initial sitting fee that makes the session sound relatively affordable. But that fee doesn’t include any images. So you pay to sit down in front of the camera, but if you want any of the photos you need to pay more. A lot more.

That’s just silly.

I also found an incredible amount of very stylized photos. Forced poses like newborn babies sleeping while awkwardly holding their heavy heads with both tiny arms.

Don’t get me wrong, they are beautifully artistic, but they fail to capture anything real.

Where do they live, sleep and play? When they grow up and want to see photos of their family when they were babies, what will they see?

What does their life really look like?

This is Picsea’s goal. To capture real moments and baby milestones with bright, unposed, and natural photography.

I thought about what I had created for my own daughter. Instead of paying for one expensive and stylized session of newborn photos, how about having smaller monthly sessions? Instead of having 100 photos of one day in your baby’s life, how about having 20 to 30 of each and every month?

Photos of every milestone, every favorite outfit, every silly face.

I came up with a simple formula:

A 30-minute session in the comfort of baby’s home with a professional photographer like me.

A selection of photos, professionally printed at a photo lab so parents can decorate their home with new, beautiful photos, every month.

Access to all the edited images online to share and download freely.

A beautiful hardco.ver book with baby’s first year in photos designed and printed at no extra charge

Here’s what one mother has to say about Picsea:

“Using Picsea to document the first year of my baby girl’s life was one of the best decisions I ever made! We have beautiful and authentic photos from every month of her first year of life as well as her first birthday party. We got my two dogs in a number of photos as well as a family photo that we used for our holiday card. I really liked how she came to our house as it captured our real life – from her favorite toys to her nursery to bath time to her changing table to nap time. The photos will be so amazing to look back on when our baby grows up.” – Risa G, Los Angeles, CA

We capture memories for generations.

Print photography especially is unique in the way it unites families around memories of past times together.

Being a parent has been one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences in my life.

As a mother, I recognize the beauty in the chaos that is life at home with a baby, and as a Picsea photographer, I have the pleasure of freezing some of it in photos forever.

I want every family to have that.
