Meet Daniel Roescheisen of Paper Cosmetics in Downtown LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Roescheisen.

Daniel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It took me a while to figure out what I want in life and then some fate and luck played a role. When I graduated, I really had no clue what I wanted to do and ended up working as a strategy consultant for a large consulting firm. Pretty much from the first day, I knew that I wasn’t going to grow old there. It was great what I learned in terms of solving real life business problems, but it felt like I was slowly dying inside. I need creativity, ideas, music, art in my life. I left consulting during the great recession and started my first brand NCLA Beauty Inc. The whole thing sort of fell into my lap and then I put my life into it. After almost eight years, I sold the majority in the business and exited the company in 2017.

After that, I played around with a couple of new ideas until one really, really stuck out. That’s when PĀPR was born. I knew that the idea was right and I felt that I could bring it to life. We as humans need to change the way we consume. Personal care items do create a lot of waste. I think it starts with little steps by as many individuals as possible. And the smaller each of our footprints become, the more sustainable or future will be. What I love the most is that PĀPR is actually, on a small scale, helping to solve a problem.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been quite a challenge to bring the product to life actually. We started completely from scratch. Getting the formula right, producing functional packaging, making sure everything works together, took over a year. I always had very clear vision of how I wanted PĀPR to look and where to position it. But translating it all into a finished product, to work with graphic designers and web developers, to work on financing, to bring it all to life – that took a lot of time. Luckily, we are the best team I can imagine and there is (almost) no better feeling than creating something and seeing it through. I love it.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Paper Cosmetics story. Tell us more about the business.
The goal of PĀPR is to be the first personal care brand that combines all natural ingredients that work with 100% biodegradable packaging for the mass market.

We are all aware of the fact that aluminum should not be put on our bodies. That’s why we have developed an incredible formula without any aluminum which is all natural. And it works really, really well! We now need to start a conversation about the second part of the equation when buying a product. If it is good for you, is it also good for the planet? Well, I can answer with a clear yes. We believe that we can play a small role in creating a more sustainable future with PĀPR products. I am grateful and really proud that people support us from day one.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think that the conversation around sustainability is only really starting. There will be a massive shift in the coming years. We will have to think about what we leave behind on the planet after we consumed a product. Companies will think of new solutions and sooner or later, it will have an effect in every industry. The personal care market is growing in general and the timing for PĀPR is perfect.

Because deodorant shouldn’t last forever 🙂
