Meet Daniel Max of Murmur in East LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Max.

Daniel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Murmur is a wellness company that launched in 2019 to build a solution for a culture that’s always plugged in. We called it “Airplane Mode for Humans” and imagined a future where it’s as easy to have an amazing wellness experience as it is to have a cup of coffee or beer.

Our initial focus was designing wellness experiences. We hosted 10 pop-up events. All of them were in LA, with the exception of a fitness festival in NY and a pro bono event in Tijuana for immigration rights workers with the LA non-profit Al Otro Lado. Our experiences delivered acupuncture, massage, breathwork, bodywork, meditation, tarot readings, dance, sound baths, and yoga to groups ranging from 20 – 150 people. We held them in some fun locations: Soho House Malibu, Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Second Home, WeWork Santa Monica, and private residences in Silver Lake and Marina Del Rey.

Pre-pandemic we were launching locations in Los Angeles and New York. Once coronavirus set in, we shifted and in three weeks, built a virtual wellness discovery platform called Daily Wellness. We did this to provide marketing, design, and small business support to wellness practitioners adversely impacted by the lockdown and to create a convenient place for people to enjoy great virtual sessions while at home.

Has it been a smooth road?
Is there such a thing? We’ve had our share of speedbumps. The biggest one we faced is that our original co-founder Catherine left the company in January after her son was diagnosed with a neurological disorder. It was a time of a lot of pain, sadness, and introspection for all of us. The future of Murmur was certainly in a delicate place.

However, the tragedy paved the way for the arrival of our new co-founder Thomas Kim. He’s a wildly talented designer who brought fresh energy, creativity, and New York hustle to the company.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Murmur is building a business similar to Class Pass, but with a richer focus on wellness. As a culture, we’re in a collective moment where many of us have no choice but to reimagine our life’s purpose and create new goals around that purpose to adjust to a changing world.

That’s where we see a range of wellness practices coming in to support people in this wild time. These practices – be it Ayurveda, breathwork, reiki, or tarot reading – they’re old and they’re deep wells to tap into. They’re about far more than feeling and looking great, which of course lovely, but not the main event. They’re about self-actualization, which is a process that inherently improves alignment in one’s career, community, and relationships. That’s what we care about and why Murmur exists.

We just turned 1-years old. So, we’re still startup newbies. But, so far, we’re known for a few things –exceptional design, treating practitioners like the rockstars they are, and a grounded and playful approach to the world of wellness, which let’s be honest, can take itself pretty seriously.

We’re proud of the talented wellness practitioners we get to support and for the opportunity to create experiences for people to heal.

What sets us apart from others is that this work is really an expression of who we are as people. It’s in our hearts, our DNA. Thinking about how to turn Murmur into a growing, sustainable business actually came last.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is a tremendous place to start a wellness company. There’s a rich culture of people here interested in the cultivation of greater well-being. With that comes a degree of openness that’s been refreshing. Now, more than ever, there’s a vitality to Los Angeles, which comes from cross-pollination of different industries with people from different walks of life. It’s not just about entertainment anymore.
