Today we’d like to introduce you to Danica Kennedy.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Danica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
For the past ten years, I’ve been living and working in LA. There were lots of highs and lows along with all sorts of ‘interesting’ job experiences. Most of my jobs were gigs, which would last a few days, then I would be back to the drawing board looking for more work. The classic LA experience! My first ‘job’ in LA was working as an intern on the show Chelsea Lately. It was an unpaid gig, but I saw it as my “foot in the door” to Hollywood. Honestly, I was paid in laughs & Belvedere Vodka. It was legendary. I spent two years working as a Marilyn Monroe impersonator at Universal Studios, which lead to lots of fun modeling gigs. I had several Tour Guide and Production Assistant jobs though FOX & NBC. That work lead to hosting and podcasting for Afterbuzz TV & RAW Artists Hollywood. After that, I worked as a Show Correspondent & Tour Guide for TMZ.
I learned so much about life, fame, & media from those work experiences. They really changed my morals, values, lifestyle, & perspective. I ultimately hit a breaking point & decided to go in a different direction (towards nature). It was difficult to make that decision after getting a “taste of the limelight.” Honestly, I loved the attention, it was a blast, but I totally overdosed on celebrity gossip and needed a fresh start. Sometimes people will ask me questions like “Don’t you feel bad about talking shit about people on TMZ?” Um, what? No. First of all, I thought I was the nice one on the show. Also, tearing people down was never my intention! I enjoy hosting & photography because I love talking to interesting people. Now I’m focused on making my own photos & podcasts. I have a new podcast out called “Planet Danica” which is available on YouTube, iTunes, Spotify, & Soundcloud.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I was constantly working, but barely scraping by financially. Living paycheck to paycheck is terrifying, especially if you don’t know where your next paycheck is coming from! There was a point where my face was everywhere (TMZ, Sephora, DryBar, Nordstrom, Amazon, etc.) but I had like no money in my bank account. I was young and wanted to be seen! I was okay with being broke until I had to rely on others for help. In the past, I’d model or host for anything, because I desperately needed money. Now I make sure to work with people & brands that have like-minded values. I finally learned my worth. Now I will only do jobs if paid appropriately.
Please tell us about Planet Danica.
I’m so excited about my new podcast “Planet Danica.” It’s pretty different from the celebrity talk show hosting I did for Afterbuzz & TMZ. I’m such a sucker for a nice one on one chat, especially phone conversations (maybe in the car, on the beach, walking, hiking, or somewhere with a view). I guess that’s the kind of vibe I’m trying to create. Some of the best conversations are ones without eye contact. I really enjoy talking to a variety of interesting people. I think all my guests make our planet a better place in their own way. I love art, nature, & animals. So far, my podcast chats have been about vegan food, ocean plastics, marketing, creativity, & comedy. It’s available on YouTube, iTunes, Spotify, IGTV, & Soundcloud. I recommend YouTube or Instagram because I like visuals. Please check out the show and let me know what you think!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think it’s important to have a silly streak. Life is way more fun and easier around people who like to have a good time.
