Meet Danica Coit of Terra Business Solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danica Coit.

Danica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am originally from California. I went to college at San Diego State University and began my career as a Certified Public Accountant there. I moved to Spain in my early 20’s to further my career and learn Spanish. Throughout my 20’s, I lived in Spain, UK, Netherlands and Ireland. I was working as an expat at a large international firm in Dublin, Ireland when I was diagnosed with my first cancer. It was shocking and completely not expected., especially being so young. This is what brought me back to California and also what started my full-time dive into entrepreneurship. Battling cancer was rough but I did not want to lose my cognitive function. During treatment, I honed in my skills and started thinking of how I could have a flexible work environment during this long battle. That is when I started my first firm.

I say firm as I have started many solo practices in different fields in the years proceeding. I did bookkeeping, English teaching, product sales – all as a solo entrepreneur; but this was my first business I was building as a firm, with employees and investors… I know I would not be able to work as much as before and I knew I needed a team. Over the next ten years, I would have battled three cancers while building multiple businesses. Some businesses were/are successful and some were for learning. The businesses range from my personal brand “The Wanderlust CEO”, an eCommerce store, a social media advertising business, a real estate investment company , to my largest business which I co-founded, virtual national accounting and tax firm, Terra Business Solutions.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not been smooth. As you can imagine, the main struggles have been around the treatment and side effects of battling three cancers. The physical and emotional tolls of cancer and cancer treatment are long-lasting and still struggles I have to battle on the daily basis. Choosing to not let cancer define me or hold me back, is an ongoing daily mantra that I gift to myself. In addition, being an entrepreneur comes with its own struggles but the strength I’ve gained from my cancer battle has definitely helped me have a thicker skin as a businesswoman. It has also given me a great empathy that I did not have before.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Terra Business Solutions story. Tell us more about the business.
My largest business is Terra Business Solutions, I co-founded Terra Business Solutions with a great friend in North Dakota, who was running a very successful soloprenuer accounting and tax business. Terra Business Solutions is a virtual accounting and tax firm that works with real estate investors and entrepreneurs. We work with entrepreneurs and real estate investors because not only are we both seasoned real estate investors and entrepreneurs but we also have accounting and tax expertise in both of these fields. We are also both Certified Public Accountants and have experience in the public and private sectors. We are extremely proud of our core values, which definitely set us apart from other accounting firms. Our core values are open and honest communication, loyalty and dedication to the success of our clients, highest standard of integrity and timely and accurate reporting. One complaint most people have of their accounting firm is lack of communication and that is one thing we can ensure will be on point and regular! Although we are virtual, we want our clients to feel like they have an in-house accounting team on call!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am not sure I believe in luck, otherwise I would say I have had a lot of bad luck. All of my cancers were rare, especially for my age. However, I would say, if it was bad luck, it pushed me to grow and ultimately turned into good luck. I believe life is what you make it and I am not sure luck plays a factor.
