Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana G. Bowling.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have worked in Casting for over 15 years here in LA, casting a variety of projects for Disney, Nickelodeon, FOX, the CW, MTV, ABC, and others. Having personally watched so many actors go through the audition process, I found myself understanding the choices that can be made to either help or hurt an actor’s chances of booking the role.
Through the years, I have taught many classes to young actors and found a passion for being a bridge to young actors (and their parents) in this confusing industry. There is so much information out there. It is incredibly easy to be misled, which can be financially and emotionally stressful for families. As a mother to two young boys, I felt the need to jump into a position of helping others in two ways: with the acting/audition technique and the behind the scenes business plan.
What started as a possible side business has quickly turned into a full-fledged coaching business. I see clients in person and all over the world via FaceTime and Skype. I also created a podcast called “The Young Actor’s Guide” where I offer tangible advice for actors and their families at no cost to them. Group classes are now on the horizon so I can expand my reach to more actors on a daily basis.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, the process of getting clients and working with them has been wonderful! I am so lucky to have a large network of agents, managers, and clients who are constantly referring to me; I am SO grateful for that! What has been a learning experience is going from working as one piece of a big production to completely working for myself.
Being an entrepreneur means working 7 days a week, and choosing work over sleep most days. I am incredibly dedicated to my business and have a hard time “turning it off” – just ask my husband! I just recently hired an assistant and that has already helped so much. Struggles and challenges are exciting to me; I just love being able to problem solve and figure it all out!
Dana Bowling Audition Coaching – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business approach is two-fold: I work with actors specifically on their auditions and acting coaching. I also work with parents to help them navigate through the muddy waters of this industry, Having a Casting background is what separates me from others.
Having seen thousands of actors audition, I know what works and what most definitely doesn’t! Also, I have an incredible network of agents and managers who send clients to me at the beginning of their journeys and I can be a part of their adventure from the start!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Since starting my podcast, “The Young Actor’s Guide”, I have received messages from actors and their parents from all over the country thanking me for offering accessible, tangible information for them. The best message said “Thank you for making us feel less alone on this journey.
I don’t know what I’m doing, but I am supporting my daughter who wants nothing more than to act.” I didn’t realize that I would be able to help so many people. That fills me up and makes me incredibly grateful for this career.
