Meet Dan Lang of Dan Lang Studio and Wile Scents in Silverlake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Lang.

Dan Lang Studio was created after a journey through many different experiences and studies. I have explored many fields ranging from science to fashion. I started my college career off studying to be a dentist and as a Division I Athlete. Through these experiences, I learned strategic planning, teamwork, patience, and dedication. After studying Biology for two years, I discovered I needed a more creative route in life. This led me to my passion for branding and packaging design. Once moving to NYC, I expanded my skills by becoming a self-taught fashion and portrait photographer and a model. I have photographed for many modeling agencies and multiple publications. After studying and receiving my BFA in Packaging Design and Branding from the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC, I began designing for many major CPG companies. Working for agencies didn’t satisfy all my cravings for design, so on my free time I began building relationships with my own clients as a freelancer. With the desire for something new, I packed up and moved to LA after living in NYC for almost 7.5 years. I am currently the Creative Director of a Beauty brand here in LA. On the side, I hold multiple clients and I continue to shoot for different modeling agencies and clients. When I moved to LA, I even started shooting more lifestyle and brand content for social media.

WILE Scents:

As a result of wanting to create my own brand and luxury packaging… I began WILE Scents. WILE Scents are familiar scents mixed with exotic and sensuous smells.

Wile was born out of the obsession for scent and love of the ambiance and atmosphere that candles create. Each candle is individually crafted and hand-poured in small batches by Danny Lang using only high-quality materials that enhance the experience of candle burning.

All candles are made in LA with Coco Apricot wax and wooden wicks.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Success never comes easily. Luckily NYC taught me to always have a strong grind and to continue to work and progress and never settle for anything but my best. Like I mentioned before, I always thought my career life was in the medical field. When I realized this wasn’t true I honestly had no idea of what I was gonna do. When I went back to the drawing board, I had two directions, culinary or design (both interests of mine). I chose design and luckily got into a very strong program at FIT. The selection rate was so small, but I worked endlessly and got in. And there will always be struggles… a client may not like your work, you may not get your dream clients right away, or you just may feel defeated at some points. But you just gotta keep going and keep finding inspiration everywhere you look! And for the times that your job gets stressful and designing for clients isn’t cutting it, remember to step away and create something for yourself.

Please tell us about Dan Lang Studio and Wile Scents.
My design business lead me to create WILE Scents. I am known for at Dan Lang Studio for my graphic design (More specifically packaging design) and photography. My design covers many areas including: Branding, Packaging, Production, Marketing/Advertising, Social Media, and Web. My photography mainly focuses on fashion models and some lifestyle imagery for brands. I shoot with all natural lighting and lots of shadow work.

I will never put out work that I am not proud of and satisfied with. I put my all into any job, no matter how big or small the project is. Design is more than just a pretty object, it has to cover many bases from practicality, sustainability to matching brand guidelines. I always take into account what my client wants and incorporate my design senses into what I believe is best for them.

As for photography, I try to pull out emotion from the model and show this in every image I shoot. I am known for my shadowy strong portraits.

And for WILE Scents, I handcraft each candle myself. I did the packaging and branding, created all the scents, and handpour and mix each and every candle with luxury ingredients.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory… that’s a hard one. I would have to say the summers on the Jersey beaches and the nights underneath the flashing lights at the boardwalk. Or the holidays with my family. I am very close to my family and they are everything to me. So not to be broad, but many of the times I spent close with my family, especially now since I am thousands of miles from them!
