Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Beltran and Tyler Rose Ratzlaff.
Dan and Tyler, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Tyler and I both picked up cameras at a young age and decided to pursue photography as a career in high school. We met our freshman year of college in a photoshop class and I knew I had to talk to this girl named Tyler. We began photographing our assignments together and soon started assisting each other on our photo shoots. We started dating about four months after meeting and a year and a half later decided to merge our businesses together. No longer were our clients Dan’s client’s or Tyler’s clients, but they were our clients, our business, and our brand. It was a really exciting time! I’m currently going to school for graphic design, so creating my own brand identity was one of the most fun parts for me. Slowly, our clients began to tell their friends, family, and coworkers about us and our awesome clientele began to grow. Our business wouldn’t be where it is today without the amazing people we get to photograph. We’ve worked on styled shoots with models and bloggers but those don’t get your business; real families and loving couples who are stoked about their photos do.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There’s definitely a learning curve when running a business with your significant other. We found out pretty quickly that Dan & Tyler Photography could take over our lives if we let it. Tyler and I are similar, but our work ethics are very different. Tyler can sit in front of the computer all day long and crank out edits but I need lots of breaks and in order to stay inspired. We had to find a balance between work and play and luckily those things came to each of us naturally. Tyler encourages us to continue working hard so we can get this session to our clients a week early, while I have learned when we need to stop, get away from work, and enjoy a Chipotle break and a trip to target.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Dan & Tyler Photography specializes in Weddings, couples, and family portraiture. We absolutely love what we do and we pride ourselves in making our clients feel comfortable in front of the camera. We do all the heavy lifting when it comes to posing.
We create a natural flow of direction and we make sure to set our couples and families up in ways that feel comfortable and look natural and candid. I’d call our style directed lifestyle sessions. We tell you how to stand and what to do but let you move and make it your own. No one wants to feel unsure and insecure in front of the camera, so we set our clients up in ways that have proven to look great and natural.
I’d say our style is bright, clean, contemporary, and timeless. We’re absolutely crazy particular about skin tones– SERIOUSLY. Overly orange, pale, or green skin tones are unacceptable for us because that isn’t how you look in person so why should your photos misrepresent you? We want to bring out the best in everyone who steps in front of our camera and there are two ways we can control that. One way is through session interaction and the other is through editing. We make sure not to jump on the latest editing trends because ten years from now, we don’t want our clients looking back on their photos and wanting another photographer who’s following the new trend. We want our clients to look at their images ten years later and love them every bit as much as they did the day we delivered their photos to them.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up with an engineer as a dad, he always loved buying me really cool robotics toys when he could. My family has always been on the latest trends when it comes to knowing about future technology and taking advantage of it. That’s translated to our photography business in that I love to research and find out what the latest camera technology is. Camera gear isn’t everything when it comes to making a great photo business– a solid understanding of lighting, an ability to connect with people, and a drive to work hard every day make a great photo business– but understanding the ins and outs of our tools has helped us to select only the best and most necessary tools to capture the images we want.
