Meet Damion Lowe of 100 Karot Photography in Compton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Damion Lowe.

Damion, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2010 I was enrolled in Los Angeles Harbor College studying film editing and working a full-time job at the Staples Center. After finishing school I decided to quit my job and purchase my first DSLR camera in hopes of pursuing film making on a more consistent basis. While on this journey I grew a profound love for photography. It is at this point of my life where I sort of “jumped off the porch” and decided this is what I wanted to do with my life. Due to the area, I grew up in and I guess good fortune, I was fortunate enough create and to maintain good relationships with many people within the music industry, and has shot for many of them. Some include TDE recording artist Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul.

I’ve also done event photography shooting artists such as the late great Nipsey Hussle, Rihanna, Asap Rocky, and Lil Boosie to name a few. My primary area of expertise within photography is high fashion. I’ve participated in helping grow a Los Angeles based clothing brand by the name of Gentry Garb, who has a storefront on Melrose, in which I was a creative director and the primary photographer for the brand. As of today, I’m fortunate enough to run a photography business by the name of 100 Karot Photography, in which I focus on Wedding Photography/Videography, High Fashion/E-commerce, Lifestyle, and Events.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I truly believe in life, nothing worth having comes easy. So yes, there have been many road bumps, losses, and lessons learned along the way. Some include losing all my photography equipment at one point and having to start over and also being turned down many times which ultimately led me to continue to work harder and perfect my craft.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
Well like I said before, I’m a photographer born and raised in Compton, primarily known for my fashion and lifestyle photoshoots. Many people commend me on my black and white photography in which I believe I have a keen eye for. I’m most proud of my growth up to this point, and most excited for the potential I feel I’ve yet to unlock.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Probably meeting Lil Wayne at the time when he was my favorite rapper lol.
