Meet Dale Kosven of M&D Brake in Palms

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dale Kosven.

Dale, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was attending Santa Monica College in the early 70’s, and at the time my father’s business wasn’t doing well. At this time, we were just selling brake parts. The partner he was working with at the time had left, so I joined my father and helped out with sales, visiting customers. I found I was pretty good at this, and was able to get more and more customers and help grow the business. The business hit a high point in the early 1980’s, and we did very well in our niche of selling brakes and other auto parts.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. In the early 90’s we started to get a lot of competition in our space. Many places opened up that were selling the same products that we were. Then we started to get people coming in, wanting to buy brake parts, and they would ask if we could fix their cars as well. So, in the mid 90’s we decided to get out of the brake parts business and specialize in repairing cars, focusing on the service side. So we hired someone that specialized in fixing all types of cars, and the rest is history!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We specialize in brakes and general auto repair. We are most proud of our knowledge of the brake systems and the suspension systems. We’ve been doing this for so many years; in fact, we get other auto repair shops bringing their jobs to us because they can’t figure out certain issues.

We’re also one of the few shops in Los Angeles that can fix classic and vintage cars. From tune-ups and oil changes to electrical repair and steering upgrades, we offer a full range of classic and vintage car repair services.

What were you like growing up?
My main interests were following and playing sports. I did it all – baseball, football, and ran track. I was a low-key, shy teenager but had a lot of friends in sports, so that was my world. I was also interested in business – I was pursuing that when I attended Santa Monica College.
