Today we’d like to introduce you to Cyndi Kay.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Cyndi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My path to becoming a Residential and Commercial Interior Designer was an unusual one. After spending over 15 yrs. working in the advertising & marketing industry, I began to feel burnt out with the daily grind of working in Corporate America. Exhausted from giving so much of my time and energy towards building someone else’s dream I knew there had to be more to life. In a nutshell, I wanted a change, a big change. That’s where my fun, exhilarating and crazy journey began! I desired to earn a living doing what I loved which was being expressive and creative. I knew that to begin building my own dreams I had to step out into the unknown and take some risks.
Focusing on my creative strengths I started to explore different business idea’s. Some gained a bit of momentum, some failed miserably, but all in all they never went anywhere. With growing frustration and a need to earn money (let’s just keep it real!), one evening while brainstorming our next steps over a glass wine, my husband, who is a well-established custom home builder in the Los Angeles area suggested I learn the construction business and start helping him with his clients and the overflow from his projects. I thought about it a while and decided it just might be a good fit. After all, TRM Construction was booming, I could learn and grow at my own pace. I also had the opportunity to work alongside my best friend and we could establish ourselves as a husband and wife construction/design team. Looking back now it turned out to be the best decision of our lives because we are having a blast and love working together when projects warrant it.
As the years went by I learned, grew and gained a priceless amount of hands on experience, forging me forward as a well-established designer and expert in my field. And even though I become a self-taught interior designer and had gained a wealth of experience I decided to go back to school to get a formally educated in the field interior design as well as become skilled in the use of create virtual renderings and visual aids to help my clients better visualize their design idea’s.
Fast forward 7 yrs., Cyndi Kay Designs is growing in leaps and bounds and we are getting ready to hire more and add to the team! Prospective clients see that value in having a contractor and designer team who can help them pull all the pieces together when considering to remodel or build a new home!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No it hasn’t always been an easy road. Some of my struggles early on where in learning to deal with growing as a company. There came a point when I became to business to handle all the work myself but also had no time to train and hire help. I had to stretch myself, become much more disciplined with my time, and not only focus on attending to my client’s needs but also focus on growing the business side of my business. It’s been a challenge but at the same time very energizing!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over I am not sure I would change a thing because in business just as in life our experiences, the good and bad alike, become our greatest teacher. However, I guess if I had to change one thing I wouldn’t have been so hard on myself when I messed up. Early on in my career my confident was easily shaken when I made a mistake and desire to be perfect blocked my creativity at times. The interior design business can look very glamorous, but behind the scenes and before everyone see’s that beautifully designed home, there is a lot of hard work put in. Schedules don’t always go as planned, tiles come in broken, client’s change their mind and yes even for the best of the best, mistakes do happen. For me it was more about learning to solve problems quickly. Learning that lesson earlier would have helped me immensely but I wouldn’t change much because the hands on experience was priceless.
