Meet Culver City Makeup Artist: Laura Calvo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Calvo.

Laura, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina where I began my Art Career. After graduating from the University of Buenos Aires, realizing my passion for the craft, I moved to Los Angeles to explore the Makeup Industry on a new level. Trained at Make-up Designory School, L.A.C.C., L.A.V.C., P.C.C. American Makeup FX and Asian Beauty artistry, Taipei, Taiwan. I also obtained a Cosmetology CA License.

I am recognized professional Make-up Artist and a member of Union LOCAL 706, Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild IATSE.

In the Motion Picture Industry, my skills range from Special Makeup effects Artist techniques like special make-up effects Lab Technician sculptor, painter, mold-maker, hair technician, and FX prosthetics applications to more classic beauty looks on a variety of Feature Films, Television productions, Music Videos, Commercials, Print, Runway and Red Carpet events.

My work has included Feature Film and Television productions such as Silence, Public Enemies, Ouija, America’s Next Top Model (CW), What not to wear(TLC), The Bachelor (ABC), etc.

Also strong background in Commercial and Print work, with clients like Disney, JCPenny, Visa Card, MasterCard, Carls Jr., AT&T, etc.

I had the honor of working with many celebrities such as Al Pacino, Andy Garcia, Sean Astin, Tyga, Snoop Dog, Alek Week, Erin Wasson, Kim Kardashian.

I continue to develop myself professionally by taking courses in instructional methodology around the world, and by working as an Artist in the Western and Occidental Motion Picture Industry.

I’m currently based in Taipei, Taiwan and Los Angeles, USA, working Internationally all over US, Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, China and Europe on location sets.

I’m fluent in English, Spanish, and Mandarin.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s not a smooth road, everything I achieved so far, it’s all for the hard work I put into my career. This Industry is thought and hard to break in. You have to be a great artist, have a great attitude and work ethics as well.

There is always new trends in the fashion industry as well new products developed in the Special effects Makeup world so you have to keep up and stay on top on it. Always learning.

Big challenge when I started working in Asia was the Makeup/Hair/Fashion trends transition from our western concept of Beauty to their concept of it. Two different worlds, totally opposite views.

Love being able to work in both worlds, learned a lot from it. Makeup/Hair/Fashion trends go according to the society and the country, as an international makeup artist you have to keep that in mind at all times when working.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and career?
I’m not a lucky person.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Professionalism, good work ethics, good Makeup & FX skills always stay on top of it, Honesty.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Best in the city I like social life, least police officers.
