Meet Culver City Freelance Illustrator: Maggie Chiang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Chiang.

Maggie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always drawn ever since I was a kid, and kind of knew then that I would hopefully someday become an artist. When it came time to college, I only focused on art colleges.

Now, I just recently graduated ArtCenter College of Design and have been freelancing for a few months.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely been a bumpy road. Just settling into the new chapter in my life, and getting used to what freelance means has been my main struggle. There are also other personal struggles here and there, when it comes to my personal work and where I want to take it.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Definitely, the biggest change lately has been the shift from print to digital. Everyone says print is dead, but I can’t see it completely disappearing. As for trends, the biggest thing I’ve noticed now have been murals. So many artists are traveling the world and creating beautiful murals everywhere.

Has there been a particular challenge that you’ve faced over the years?
I think my biggest challenge will be motivation and consistency. I feel that it is really easy to get put down and want to stop. In an industry where my work is constantly being judged can be difficult at times and put a strain on my insecurities with myself and my work.

Let’s change gears – is there any advice you’d like to give?
I think just keep working hard, and try not to let the opinions of others get to you. Do what you enjoy, and make work for yourself that you also enjoy. There’s always that feeling of wanting to please others and not yourself.

Get yourself out there, don’t hide your work. I still feel like I have a long way to go, and want to continue to improve.

Also, don’t let rejection get to you. There are always different opportunities out there, just have to work hard and find them.
