Meet Crystal Yanez of Creyan Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Yanez.

Crystal, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My grandfather gave me my first sewing machine as a Christmas present one year. I made a few small projects like blankets for myself and family. Then my sewing machine just collected dust. A few years later my grandfather passed away from cancer. After he passed I remember sitting thinking about him and remembered his expression on his face when he gave me my sewing machine and it just gave me that spark to sew something, unique. With the help of YouTube, I created my first toiletry bag.

I was so proud of it, sewing a zipper and everything, took me all day but I did it! I posted pictures of it on my Facebook page and the response I received from family and friends was overwhelmingly positive. Then the light bulb went off. I am a stay at home mom and the idea of being able to make some money to help my family was a clear motivation to start Creyan Designs. I opened a Facebook page Creyan Designs and Instagram page Creyan_Designs.

I started attending craft shows then local comic cons. I have set up shop at Long Beach Comic Con and LA Comic Con and currently, I have my mini shop set up at Frank and Sons Collectible Show in the City of Industry. I just love that I am able to stay at home with my children as they get older, help out my family financially and I create everything with my hands and my machine. It’s a great feeling.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I first started doing craft shows I struggled to come up with fees most shows require fees upfront and just starting out made it difficult. Then I started using social media as a free service to get my business out there and the response was great.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I make toiletry bags, makeup brush holders, gym bags, duffel bags, purses, aprons and a variety of other items. I think what sets me apart is my style of bags. That is one of the most compliments I get, most say they have not seen anything like my bags and how well made they are.

What were you like growing up?
I didn’t have much of a positive childhood. I did have a love for dinosaurs and animals. I had a pet iguana named Cleo that was there for me for a lot of difficult times. She was my light.
