Meet Crystal Quiñonez of Crystal & Hair in Fullerton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Quiñonez.

Crystal, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am 28 years old and I have been doing hair for over just under 8 years. Its kinds funny how I got started. I honestly was never good at school and I never really knew what I wanted to do because I never was the bookie type. One day I was sitting in front of my mirror doing my hair and makeup like I did every day, even when I had nowhere to go, that’s when my husband walked up to me and said,” why don’t you go to school for hair and makeup?” I honestly had no idea that this even existed because I grew up in the middle of nowhere and was super sheltered. I do have to say he has kept me motivated because this industry is rough at times and when I needed the support he was there. That’s when I enrolled in Fullerton College because they and the best program and it was fast paced. I didn’t care for school much but since it was hands on it definitely was my kind of thing. I after I completed the program I went to work in a big salon and assisted for a year. I learned so many cool things and it didn’t even feel like work. I was so excited to go in to the salon everyday just to talk to people. I then realized that a lot of my life experiences actually helped other people when they would struggle with their own personal issues. I always had a lot of advice to give and that made me feel good to be able to make them feel good about them self. Beauty is a big deal, and I definitely believe the way you look reflects the way you feel. I love my job and being able to make everyone feel as good as I do. I never look at it as a JOB!!!! its super fun and I have and consider most of my clients being friends. I was so excited when I came to Sola Salon. Being able to be my own boss was just an added bonus. I can give my clients what they want without any restrictions. I can make my own hours and stay as late as I need. Hopefully more opportunity will come my way, because I definitely know that it won’t end here. I’ve worked very hard for everything I have after 7 years of hard work, and dedication, but it goes by when you’re having fun!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I was almost 3 years in I was demoted to be an assistant again, I had a confidence issue and would second guess myself constantly. After about 6 months I decided that I was ready even if no one else thought I was. I have to say the shame in being demoted and me being a Leo really didn’t sit well with me. It only made me want to work harder and prove everyone wrong.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Crystal & Hair – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I own a Private Suite through Sola Salon. I work alone and make my own hours. I specialize in beaded weft extensions, individual extensions, color, color corrections, cutting, makeup, and Brazilian blowout. I believe that what sets me apart from everyone else is the fact that I don’t care about the money, because when you’re good at something the money will come, but the fact that I will be honest, I won’t get your hopes up if I know that something is not possible the first time, and if it doesn’t look good I will let you know but all in all you make the ultimate decision. Like I said, I am here to make you feel good, and I can’t do that by being dishonest.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I would like to either upgrade my suite and become and educator because I love to share what I know. Maybe hitting up some events where I can get away for a little while for a change of scenery, but I will always put my clients first. Maybe start an online retail shop to help market my business.
