Meet Cris Navarro of 3K ATHL3TX in Glendora

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cris Navarro.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Cris. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When Voyage contacted me about sharing my story through their platform, I instantly said yes because I want to inspire people that have experienced a difficult situation in life, to overcome those obstacles through hard work and perseverance.

My story starts when I was attending school at Cal Poly Pomona, majoring in Civil Engineering, after transferring from Mount San Antonio College. It was a day like any other that Aprill 11th, I had a school that day, assignments to turn in, and lectures to attend. I heard my dad take off to work at 6 am as usual, and knew I had a few minutes to start getting ready to take off to school. A couple of minutes after he had gone through the door, I heard someone knockin, so I assumed he had forgotten something. I quickly ran to get the door, and it was Immigration and Customs Enforcement deporting my parents. Just like that, without notice, my life changed in an instant, leaving me with a lot of confusion, and decisions to make. I now had my 11-year-old sister to care for, a mortgage to worry about, expenses that I did not have before this event, and on top of that, I was in the middle of a semester.

A million ideas came to my mind, emotions of anger, confusion, and unclarity surrounded me. I hit rock bottom because my parents were my support system, and now I did not have them with me. I have always been an independent individual that acts quickly, so I started looking at all the expenses that I had to cover for in order to formulate a budget and plan. My inspirations this whole time were my parents that migrated to this country for us to have a better future, and my sister that I had to set an example for, and ensure that her future was not in jeopardy because of this horrible event.

After I accounted all the expenses and formulated a budget, and completed that semester in school, I made the difficult decision of putting school on hold and starting a basketball training business, picking up multiple jobs along the way, that allowed me to get by as I grew my business. I decided to go all-in with basketball because I have always enjoyed training my sister, and saw the opportunity for a business when parents would always ask me to work with their kids. Of course, at the time, I had no intention of turning this passion into a business because I was fully committed to Engineering at Cal Poly Pomona. But after this event, I decided to take action to start formulating a business plan that would allow me to make a living training basketball player.

In the beginning, I started with a couple of my sister’s teammates. I had no prior background on starting a business, how to market myself, and ultimately, how to grow and develop a sustainable business. I knew that I had to educate myself on these topics in order to become successful, but what I did have going for me were results. My sister was one of the area’s best players throughout middle school and high school, and the teammates I was working with were getting results as well. I just had to show these results to the world!

I decided to just keep working and continue training these players, and word of mouth finally started spreading, resulting in new clients. This was great, but I had set big goals for myself and the business, so I needed more information and education to develop as a business person and build a business that I would be proud of, keeping my parents and sister in mind.

I started doing research and came across great pioneers in the Basketball Training field, that had released tons of content on the business development side of basketball training. Guys like Drew Hanlen, Alex Bazzell, Ganon Baker, and Jordan Lawley. These entrepreneurs were highly successful with their businesses, so I began to dive deeper into their mindsets, and reverse engineer the actions that got them to where they are. I took tons of notes and learned a lot from podcasts that they were featured in, and then came across great opportunities to actually directly learn from them. I invested into Drew Hanlen’s NEXT Mentorship Program, Jordan Lawley’s “Trainer’s Guide to Success”, and Ganon Baker’s mentorship program.

These investments were the turning point for my career as a Basketball Skills, Trainer. I started implementing what I learned and started seeing results in my business growth. All the programs had information that has helped me along the way, but Drew’s NEXT program catapulted my learning curve, by being on the court interacting with a lot of his Pure Sweat Skills Trainers, just picking their brains about their stories and business topics. Guys like Luke Cooper and Dakota Webb. Not to mention, I was helping on the court with Drew’s NBA workouts, featuring players like Jayson Tatum, Bradley Beal, Chris Paul, Tacko Fall, Meyers Leonard, Solomon Hill, Mo Bamba, Kelly Oubre Jr., Jordan Clarkson, Semi Ojeleye, and other Pro and College players. I also met NBA Trainer Alex Bazzell through Drew, and assisted in his workouts with Trae Young, Bobby Portis, Carmelo Anthony, Kyrie Irving, Candace Parker, Naphessa Collier, Doug McDermott, Skyy Clark, Tyus Battle, and other great players, and met Zac Boster that helped me on the business and training side.

It has been an unbelievable learning experience, and I have grown immensely as a businessperson and trainer being around all these great minds. It has also expanded my scope to what is possible in the future.

3K ATHL3TX now offers Basketball Training services, as well as Sports Performance training for athletes of different sports, training players all over Southern California. I decided to expand into Sports Performance after realizing that my players needed help developing speed, agility, power, stability, coordination, quickness, and developing athleticism in general, along with their basketball skills. I have invested into a business seminar by DBC Fitness in Miami, and continue to get educated on different topics of this industry. I plan on pursuing a degree in Exercise Science, completing certifications at DBC, and from Equinox’s Trainer Chris Gorres, and always improving my programming for Basketball Training and Sports Performance Training.

I’m so excited for the future of 3K ATHL3TX, and all the players that I will be able to help! My inspiration for everything I do now is to make my parent’s dream of my sister and I becoming successful a reality. It has not been easy, and I have a lot of ground to cover to get to where I want to get to, but I am highly motivated and up to the task. My sister is currently a Junior playing College Basketball and majoring in Business Administration, and my parents will be able to return to the country with their legal documents. My message to entrepreneurs, or anybody that has gone through hardship or difficult situation, is to find a motivation that is bigger than yourself, and never look back or giver up, just look on becoming better every day and building for the future.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been smooth at all, I have had to learn and implement every day. From the start, I had no idea how to market myself and my services. Pricing is something I had to learn as I got more experience. A huge hurdle was not having a consistent basketball gym to train out of. Cancellations and reschedules killed me in the beginning since I had no systems and structures in place to protect me from this. There were times where clients did not pay on time or in some cases at all, because I had no payment system in place, so I lost money. Because I did not have a location, weather, time change, and when city teams would be using the courts, this would affect my business and negatively fluctuate my income.

Please tell us about your work. What do you guys do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I have not have changed a thing, just because the journey has made me the person I am today. Of course, I would have got here faster with the knowledge of the business that I have now, but this whole process has been a learning experience for me.
