Meet Courtney Teehan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Teehan.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always had a huge passion for all things food and art ever since I was a child and when I discovered cake design combined the two I fell absolutely in love. I knew that was exactly what I was born to do! Fast forward to 2020, I lost my bartending job and realized it was now or never to truly dive in 10,000% and follow my dreams. I started my business making sugar cookies during the pandemic since they were all individually wrapped it was a great way for people to celebrate life’s milestones with something sweet while still trying to stay safe. Honestly, when I started the sugar cookies I knew I did not want to do them forever as my heart was really with cakes, so I pulled the ‘ol bait and switch and in 2021 I stopped doing cookies altogether to fully pursue my passion of cake design. Since then, I have had the greatest honor of creating over 40+ wedding cakes for my incredible couples, working with some of the greatest wedding vendors California has to offer and winning California Wedding Day’s Best of 2022 Cakes and Desserts for Los Angeles!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Hahaha oh absolutely not! But with success in building any business and brand, there will always be bumps along the way. I’ve known how to bake my entire life, but now I was diving into something completely unknown. I suddenly had to become the web designer, head of marketing, content creator, cleaner, food supplier, baker, designer, communications and SO much more. No one tells when you start your own business all these hats, you will have to wear as one person. I had been a bartender on autopilot for almost 10 years so suddenly having to learn SO many different jobs at once was hard and a huge challenge mentally and if I am being real, it still is. A lot of days filled with self-doubt, nonstop questions running in my head, will people like my cakes, am I even doing this right? And truly, no one really knows. Finding my balance in immersing myself in so many new and different things has been my biggest struggle and I am so grateful for all my client’s patience and understanding along the way. If it wasn’t for them believing in me and trusting me, I would not be where I am today. Along with that, having a great support system of friends, family, business friends and my community has truly been my rock. I am forever grateful for each and every one of them. LOVE Y’ALL!!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Teehan Cake Design specializes in creating stunning, unforgettable statement wedding cakes that capture the hearts and minds of not only the newlywed couple but all of their family and friends, as it creates an emotional experience that no one will ever forget, from the moment they first lay eyes on it, to that very first bite of bliss. And that bite is what sets Teehan Cake Design apart from others. The only thing that exceeds the breathtaking exterior is the undeniable layers of flavor that will have everyone coming back for more.

It is never “just a cake” from me. They are beautiful forms of edible art that is to be enjoyed not only by our taste but also with our eyes and our hearts. A huge thing people tend to remember about celebrations is the food. How everything tasted, how it made you feel, and the memory it will provide for you for years to come.

Although it is still early in the Teehan Cake Design journey, one of the proudest accomplishments was being named 2022 Best Cakes and Desserts by California Wedding Day Magazine.
