Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Kessler.
Courtney, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Cooking & baking have been a passion of mine since I was a child and watching Julia Child on KQED instead of Saturday morning cartoons. As I grew up, I spent my free time in the kitchen. Whether it be helping my parents with dinner or playing mad scientist in the kitchen and truly learning to respect the science behind baking.
Fast forward to 2010 when one day at work I was chatting with a co-worker who asked me “what is it you want to do” as far as my career so down the rabbit hole I went looking into culinary schools “out of curiosity” and further on to signing up & working to achieve my Associates Degree in Baking & Pastry. Once I graduated, I worked in a small bakery and eventually was hired at Bottega Louie and really learned the art of pastry from the production standpoint. Eventually, I returned to office management work while pursing my baking business in my off hours and through my blood, sweat and tears Sour N Sweets was born.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
With Sour N Sweets still in its infancy, I have not faced many struggles so far. With what I have learned with life in general, it’s to embrace what can be considered a fail or struggle because the greatest lessons are born from those moments. Cheers to failing forward!
Sour N Sweets Desserts – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Sour N Sweets Desserts is all about creating the best desserts for my clients. I am always looking to try pastry, chocolate or sugar methods that are out of my wheelhouse and create desserts with an edge. I am most proud of my willingness and ability to rise to any occasion or challenge knowing my personal magic is what sets me apart from others in my field.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, there can be different ways to define success but the main definition of success is seeing and/or hearing the positive reaction from my client when they pick up their order. I am equally as happy and consider when I don’t break the fragile toppers for a cake or cupcakes a huge success.
