Today we’d like to introduce you to Costwo.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Hi, I’m Marcel Ebersbach alias Costwo.
Born 1981 in the city of Erfurt the capital of Thuringia in Germany.
Son of a Police Officer (Dad) and a Butcher (Mom).
My very first Moment with Graffiti was in 1994. A school mate came around with a few videos like Beat Street and Wildstyle. Since that moment It got me. I started drawing when I was a very young child. When I look back to my childhood, it was always everything about drawing and painting. First, with the graffiti it was just regular Letters like the typical graffiti Styles.
In the search for the right name, I’d tried as much as possible names/letter combinations.
1997 I decided for Costwo and used different writings like Cos2, Cost2, Costu and finally Costwo inspired by Cantwo from the SUK. He was one of my Idols.
I was writing day and night.
Around 1999 I’ve focused on characters because I wanted to show some more than letters. The keyword is technical perfection. I’m a little perfectionist what means that I’m pushing and pushing myself trying to reach my goals. Am I Satisfied? No. There is no real satisfaction. If you’re satisfied, quit everything immediately and go get yourself a regular job.
I’m a self-educated Artist what means that I’ve never been to an art school or something else like that.
I feel free to do what I love as long as I can feed my family. It gives me so many possibilities to create something. Even the traveling, Graffiti took me to places where I’ve never been like Mumbai, Shanghai, Beijing, Israel, just to name a few.
I’ve even met my spouse trough Graffiti, and now we’re painting together as COLY_ART. COLY = CO Costwo + LY=Lizzy ( first and last letters of our single names combined to COLY).
As Costwo I love to paint chimeras.
It’s something mystical unreal I’m able to give a personality through the Head of the Animal. I really love to paint Hyena chimeras. It’s one of the most underestimated animals on earth.
It has an ugly aggressive beauty that I really love to paint.
I also do commissions work.
My commissions are kinda different than my free works.
My main field in commissions is actually 3D UV Blacklight Art.
One of the highlights in the past was a private airplane that I’ve painted with a very unique custom design back in 2016 in Switzerland.
I also work as a designer in fashion especially fitness fashion.
Now I’m working on my reputation and more commissions in and around LA.
Please tell us about your art.
I’m a self-educated graffiti artist painting murals with spray paint.
The message of my chimera paintings is that we are animals no matter what we do.
It doesn’t matter what we believe to be when it comes to a critically point we are just following lower instincts.
Especially hyenas, they are the one and only mammal since there are animals on this planet. They are able to chew and eat everything even claws and bones.
That is absolutely unique in mammals. This is like super crazy.
Hyenas working and living in a clan
The Leader is a female.
It has something romantic like Amazonas in a tribe.
What if, women lead the world?
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
Today it’s way better than 20yrs back.
Sorry but I’m not really able in the position to answer the last question because actually I’m a newbie so it will take a little time to make my own experiences to figure and find out what works good and what should be better. When I look overseas to Europe they are opening public places to paint, abandoned places turning into big street art galleries and they are organizing big street art festivals.
Lower rents for artists because they have lower income.
LA should have something like this.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can see my Art on the streets.
