Meet Cory Storey of The Kind Kind in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cory Storey.

Cory, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in a musical household. My mom taught me the piano at a young age and my dad would sing songs he wrote on the guitar. It always felt like that was a normal part of growing up for everyone. I now realize how fortunate I was (and still am) for my creative and incredibly supportive family. We all even played out for a while: my dad sang and played guitar, my mom played drums or bass, and I played the keys. That was a very special part of my life.

In college as a theatre arts major at Cal State Long Beach, I found my voice. I learned aerial acrobatics, did lots of productions, and most importantly started writing songs. Eventually, I partnered up with Brian Bello and Josiah Miller, and we created the epic group Gentlemen Explorers. Brian found the need to go out and explore the world, which left me missing that musical outlet. I continued to explore inward and writing songs on my own. People started asking me to play those songs in public, which pushed me to get a band together. After a few years of playing with different musicians, all of whom I love dearly, we got to what the band is now. THE KIND KIND

JJ Ryder: master shredder on the guitar
Al Willis: rock star bassist.
Nick Law: tasteful and funky keys player
Ternell Cooksey: beastly drummer

I am so grateful for this talented bunch of dedicated musicians. Whether playing or just hanging out, we all vibe so easily that it makes the whole process just a lot of fun.

Music has always been and always will be a huge part of life. It is there to help us cope, for us to dance and sing along with, and to remind us we are all alive. To live is a curious thing. We can so easily feel misunderstood and isolated on our journey. After all, it is an individual’s journey. But we’re all in it together. That right there is the reason I started writing songs. To speak my truth of what it means to be a human in this crazy world. I believe we fall in and out of love so that we can fall in love with ourselves. Along this path to self-love, we “tear down the bricks of the wall one by one” lyrics from their upcoming music video “1 x 1” directed by Alan Rice. (coming New Year’s Day) That same day we will release our five song EP to melt the hearts and minds of listeners everywhere. Check it out!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth as the unpredictable ocean. Haha. Really though, I’d say overall each obstacle had its way of working itself out. Most of those obstacles were self-made, which meant they needed to be self-resolved. Though there are many things I wish I would have handled with more finesse, I am proud of myself for facing the difficult situations. Rather than passively letting life happen to me, I leveled up. I am thankful for everything that has come along the way, for it has made me who I am and gotten me to do what I’ve done.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Songs written from the heart, about the world, to free the mind. We are a 5-piece psychedelic indie-rock band with a sound hard to pin down, because of the diversity in our songs. We have been compared to lots of bands, from Pink Floyd and The Beatles to Incubus and Sublime. Each musician brings such a special flavor that complements and enhances the overall sound beautifully. Plus if you catch us live, you’re likely to see a jam session at the end of our set that shows off how talented each musician is while playing something that is a one time only deal. Don’t take my word for it though, keep up with us to find out about our next show and experience the magic for yourself.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
What’s the saying? Luck is when preparation meets opportunity? Well with that in mind, each of us have prepared our whole lives for this amazing opportunity to get to play together. Because of that we have been recognized in the music community and just about every show that booked us was from someone asking us to play. But now that we will have better tools to reach out to venues, we will be doing just that. Also, if you book bands, we would love to hear from you. Remember to be kind to yourselves so you can be kind to others. Be the kind kind.
