Today we’d like to introduce you to Cory Morgenstern.
Cory, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been recording, entertaining and teaching for over 40 years. I am a native New Yorker who grew up in Queens and Long Island and moved to Manhattan where I met my wife Anita Morgenstern, a great chiropractor. We left Manhattan for Westchester via the Bronx and had two daughters, Lucy and Molly who both became full-time musicians and actors and moved to California in 2012. When people ask me how we came to move to California I tell them the kids moved here, my wife followed the kids and I followed the wife. I’m never going back to New York!!!
I always knew I was going to be a full-time musician and was fortunate enough to meet many influential artists along the way including songwriters, entertainers, and teachers. I worked and studied with as many of them as I could, always said yes and have been gigging, recording and teaching since I was in my late teens. This experience has helped me become an expert in my craft.
So whether you are making a party, looking for lessons on piano, guitar, bass, violin, voice or harmonica, or need to record a project I can help you. You’re welcome to contact me at 914 774-4937 or check me out on the web at www.corymorgenstern.com
Has it been a smooth road?
Ha Ha ha!! No, it has not been a smooth road!!! I struggled against my parents and friends advice and paid a lot of dues along the way. I took every gig imaginable and learned some tough lessons from band leaders and teachers. I learned to listen and recognize when others had something of value to teach me. I studied and paid for lessons to learn how to record in ProTools, as well as music lessons from some world class artists. I kept getting better bit by bit and have been able to support myself for over 40 years now.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Cory Morgenstern Music – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I work primarily alone whether it’s for a recording project, teaching one on one or going out and doing a one man band show or freelancing on keyboards and guitar with other bands. I have a professional home recording studio know in the recording business as a “writers’ room” with great gear and capable of doing a master recording. I also have access to great mixing engineers who work with me. I have some wonderful keyboards such as a Nord Stage 2 for those who know of it and electric and acoustic guitars, Fender Precision Bass, electric violins, and harmonicas. I have a Korg PA50 one man band keyboard I use and do shows at senior centers and community centers as well as nursing homes where I get the audience involved through music from around the world and through the decades. I sing in ten different languages and also do lots of specialty Holiday themed parties for every month. I am most proud that I have been able to make a living only through music and feel as though my music really heals and helps others especially when I am teaching or playing for the elders. What sets me apart from others has been my being willing to say yes to everything and gain enormous experience in recording, teaching and performing. I did over 400 gigs a year at times.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Can we talk? ha ha ha!
I love, love, love the weather and the relaxed and laid back feeling (most of the time)
In LA. On the other hand, how shall I say this tactfully, New Yorkers, whatever you think about them and I had 60 years experience growing up and living in New York, are very direct and as a New Yorker I find it harder to “read” some people out here. Hope; you take this in the right way folks!
- I charge $100 an hour for gigs
- My teaching rates are $30 half hour and $60 hour
- Recording rates are $50 nour
