Meet Cortney Fogg of Books, Brunch, and Black Women LA in South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cortney Fogg.

Cortney, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my journey with books when I was in middle school. My eighth grade teacher explained to me how fundamental and exciting books were. She gave me my first book, Twilight, and from there I was addicted to reading. Throughout high school and college you would find me tucked in a corner reading a new book every other week. As an adult, unfortunately, it is difficult for me to sit down and relax with a good book due to work and other priorities. One day I was scrolling through Instagram and seen a post stating “life is not all about work, make time for your hobbies”. I am so thankful I seen that post because I immediately looked for book clubs in the area. That’s when I messaged Jessica, the founder of books, brunch, and black women, and she said there wasn’t a book club within the LA region. She proceeded to ask me if I would like to start up my very own chapter. Of course, I said yes because I was and still am dedicated to tending to my hobbies. I have been the founder and organizer for books, brunch, and black women LA for about two years now and am loving every moment of it.

Has it been a smooth road?
The saying, “if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life” is so true. Of course, there have been obstacles and times when I felt like I wanted to stop. For example, I hosted an event and all of the things I typically do as a host, I completely forgot. I was embarrassed and frustrated with myself for not being on my A-game. There were times when I was so busy with work and school and felt myself slipping back into the “hobbies can wait” mindset. The road has not been smooth however, it has been worth it. The supportive ladies in my book club and other chapters make everything worthwhile.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Books, Brunch, and Black Women LA story. Tell us more about the business.
Books, Brunch, and Black Women LA was created to allow a safe and comfortable environment for Black women. Most people frown upon book clubs because they assume the book selection and people are boring. I am here to proudly say we are not your ordinary book club! We read books from various Black authors and get together each month to chat and enjoy brunch together. There are times when I give the opportunity to the ladies to decide which book to read for the month. Additionally, when we aren’t enjoying brunch from various black-owned restaurants throughout LA, we are uplifting and catching up with each other via GroupMe and Instagram! I am most proud of the fact that we are building a sisterhood with each other. I truly believe it is essential to have loving and supportive people in your circle.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I believe books, brunch, and black women LA will expand over the next 5-10 years. I see it having more amazing members that value uplifting their fellow sisters and creating everlasting memories together. Additionally, there are Chapters in New York, Atlanta, Houston, Alabama, North Carolina and, of course, Los Angeles. I am excited to see us grow and pop up in more states!
