Meet Cole Hickok of MRC Behavioral Academy in South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cole Hickok.

Cole, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been immersed in the world of special needs my entire life. My sister is on the Autism spectrum, so I’ve witnessed the everyday successes and struggles many individuals on the spectrum face daily. I was motivated to pursue working with individuals after my younger sister had turned 18 and I saw the difficulties our mom was having to find adequate programming for her.

I started MRC Behavioral Academy, LLC with two other Directors named Michael Yamase M.A. ED. and Randy Dowdy M.S. Human Behavior, in October of 2016. I’m the Director of Family Services & Logistics. We provide person centric programming for individuals with special needs. I have always believed there can be a more efficient and effective way to deliver programming to individuals on the spectrum. I wanted to design unique programming for people on the spectrum with like minded individuals and create a new system that takes care of its service providers. My goal with MRC Behavioral Academy is to ensure that every individual learns to the best of their ability while ensuring a safe and therapeutic environment.

Has it been a smooth road?
When there is a lack of quality programming available, there are many challenges to overcome when creating an effective service. An initial challenge is gaining a family’s trust and having them believe in what we do. Every parent wants to make sure their loved ones are in good hands, safe, and learning proper life skills. Another common challenge I have noticed throughout the special needs community is the value placed on quality programming. How society views special needs services needs to change.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the MRC Behavioral Academy story. Tell us more about the business.
Located in the South Bay, the MRC Behavioral Academy provides programming for individuals on the Autism spectrum and related disorders. MRCBA offers After School, Weekly Outings, and Seasonal Outings into the Los Angeles and Orange County areas. We specialize in services in Socialization, Physical Fitness, and Snack/Meal Preparation. We provide in-house transportation through MRC Premier Transit with trained behaviorists on board.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Unfortunately, the number of diagnoses increase every year as we have only begun to understand how Autism and related disorders take hold. It is our perspective that the need for quality and consistent care will only increase as well, in order to address the growing need. With that said, we can expect to continue to provide a professional level of care. MRC Behavioral Academy hopes to provide a new standard for programming for individuals with special needs.
